Pop diva's tunes are clean but lack their usual fire.

The themes of this music are:   love, romance, sex, sneaking around

Why We Rated This on for Ages 12 and Up

The good stuff

  • Messages:

Though Carey talks a lot about being broken hearted on this record, she advocates for staying strong in songs like "It's a Wrap" -- and keeps the conversation pretty clean overall.
  • Role models:

Mariah Carey has been around a long time, achieving (and maintaining) her superstar status yet managing to keep her songs and image fairly clean.

What to watch out for

  • Violence:

    Not an issue.
  • Sex:

Just a few mild references like "I know you want to hit it like the lotto..."
  • Language:

Only a couple of s-words, but Carey is careful with her language, even going so far as to say "f-ed up" in place of the real f-word.
  • Consumerism:

A few product specifics, including Jimmy Choo shoes and McDonald's.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

One or two mentions of drinking, and, in the song "Obsessed," a reference to "E" (the drug ecstasy).

What Parents Need to Know

About Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel

Parents need to know that the sexiest thing about Mariah Carey remains her skimpily-clad promotion photos: as on past albums, the lyrics in her latest record omit foul language, egregious sexual references, and mention of most other adult content.

  1. I rate this title on for age 10 and give it 4.0
    My concerns are:
    • Excessive consumerism

At first, I hated this album. But after I listened to it a couple of times, it sounded good. I think Mariah could have done better on this album though. It's a fairly clean album too. But there's actually a lot of products mentioned..(In More Than Just Friends), Jimmy Choo's, McDonalds, Chrissy Lou's,(In The Impossible), Kool-Aid, Louis Millionaire Shades, Duncan Hines Yellow Cake, Louboutin heels In (Candy Bling), Sweet Tarts, Ring Pops (In Obsessed), Windex In (Betcha Gon' Know), Black Cavalli Shades, Oprah Winfrey,.and more And in Ribbon it says 'It's only been 20 good minutes since I kissed you, come back boo I miss you wish I had 20 million hours to caress you, and undress you, to be continued....In Up Out My Face it says No you ain't hittin it, In More Than Just Friends it says I Wanna be all on your lips like gelato, Love me down till I hit the top of my soprano. And In Candy Bling it says 'Irresponsible things we would do like fall asleep on the phone and skippin' school' Mimi's still amazing!
