What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Jewel's second children's album is a happy and calming album that will not only entertain your little one and put them at ease at bedtime, but also teach them about the meaning of real happiness, loving yourself, and loving others. These are mostly original tunes, but there are also some classic songs that you'll appreciate, all with Jewel's touch of folk, dreaminess, and fun; it's great for any age.

  • A simple and sweet education in classic children's tunes like "Oh Susanna" and "My Favorite Things."
  • Happy, calming, and dreamy songs about being happy, safe, and loving life.
  • "Happy" is a simple song about the greatest feeling on earth and the unique differences in all of us; it teaches kids not to judge, saying, "Everybody has to be something, whatever makes them happy."
  • Not applicable.

What's the story?

Jewel has made a career with her angelic voice and knack for writing lyrical tunes; this talent is clear on her second children's album, THE MERRY GOES ROUND. Although some parents might miss her early days ("Pieces of You"), she's just as charming and enchanting on this album for their toddlers and preschoolers; now she's just singing about sleepy kids, scary shadows, penguins, superhero dogs, and rainbows. The 16 songs on The Merry Goes Round include mostly Jewel originals, in addition to classics like "Oh Susanna," "And the Green Grass Grows All Around," "My Favorite Things," and "She'll Be Comin' Round the Mountain," all with Jewel's artistic stamp, of course.

Is it any good?

Jewel's angel-like vocals make her the perfect voice to serenade anyone. "The Supermarket Song," about that oft-dreaded and unpredictable trip to the grocery store, will appeal to both parents and fidgety 4-year-olds, and "Bucky the Bull" is a preschooler's answer to the Beatles' classic "Rocky Raccoon." "Only Shadows" will soothe the fears of bedtime with lyrics like "that thump thump is just the dog's tail waggin'" (Phew...!). And the Celtic-like lullaby, "Just Like Penguins Do," will ease your little ones off happily to dreamland. Most of the songs are mellow folk with the addition of Jewel's top-notch acoustic guitar skills and have feel-good messages about life as a little one, love, and just being happy. You and your kids will feel better, and maybe even be better, just by listening to these sweet songs.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about being afraid of something, like in the song, "Only Shadows." What are you afraid of? What makes you feel better? Does this song make you feel less afraid? How?

  • Jewel has been around the music industry for a long time. Do you think the fact that she is already famous makes it more likely that people will buy a children's album from her? Although she's singing songs for kids here, her vocals and the overall feel of the album are still similar to her signature style. Do you like the way she sings on these songs?
