What’s the Story?

Reviewed by Stephanie Bruzzese

Arguably the most famous American Idol who never was, Season 5 contestant and vocal powerhouse Chris Daughtry is back with his namesake band on NO SURPRISE -- the first single off their impending second album. Known throughout his Idol tenure for his clean living and devotion to family, Daughtry demonstrates the same wholesomeness in this song about falling out of love. He avoids the name-calling and pot shots in which many jilted singers indulge, opting instead for a mature perspective on how ending his relationship will ultimately be better for both him and his partner: "It's no surprise I won't be here tomorrow / Yeah you and I will be a tough act to follow / But I know in time we'll find this was no surprise."

Is It Any Good?

Chris Daughtry made it all the way to fourth place on Idol for a reason: he's got a great voice. That said, this single follows the same unadventurous, made-for-radio formula as most of the tracks on his last record. It's a shame, since such exceptional vocals deserve to be backed by much more creative songwriting.
