More on The One

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
Families can talk about the song "How to Deal" and the challenges that come with making hard choices.

What's the story?

What's the story?
Frankie J is enormously talented, and applies his considerable skills, in two languages, to what appear to be thirteen versions of the same song on his second album -- in that way, THE ONE is aptly named. One of the few lyrically interesting tracks is "How to Deal," in which the Kumbia Kings alum explores the hard choices involved in going for a music career at the expense of a relationship. There's no resolution, but we feel his pain. And we feel it over and over again on a number of similarly well-produced tracks on which he sings beautifully about love, loss, heartbreak, and hope.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

Slick, glossy production and just-OK songwriting make this a pleasant but ultimately forgettable album. Frankie J is a terrific singer of the teen-heartthrob variety, and the occasional Spanish lyrics add an extra layer of emotion and romance. Frankie even seems like a genuinely nice guy. But the material isn't nearly up to the level of his vocal performances, and he ends up sounding more like an American Idol contestant than a rising music star with something unique to offer.

I'm Impressed
With many of the artists striving to push the limits, and even more going too far past them, Frankie J's "One" album is something I found refreshing. I was happy that my 16 yr. old daughter chose this CD.
