Parents need to know that this track is about as clean as it gets, offering no offensive language or references to sex, drugs, or violence -- just some back-and-forth about being the best choice of romantic partner out there.
Reinventing herself once again, longstanding R&B queen Mary J. Blige is back with THE ONE, a new single in which she collaborates with Drake -- one of the hottest young MCs on the scene. As R&B songs go, this song is exceptionally tame, with lyrics that include nothing more than a lot of bragging on Blige's part about being the best woman out there: "Them other girls that you done been with, none of them got nothing on me / Ain't got my style, ain't got nothing on me, nothing on me / Way I walk, way I talk, my swagga." In response, Drake (whose group Young Money has been known for some pretty raunchy lyrics) delivers an innocuous rap about needing a woman who isn't "perfect" but will "make it all worth it."
In light of Mary J.'s powerful pipes, it's disappointing to hear her succumb to the ubiquitous Auto-tune in this song. Fortunately, she doesn't rely on it throughout, spending most of the track showcasing the awesome vocals that have earned her a spot at the top of the R&B hierarchy. Drake performs equally well, rhyming with great timing and flair. The combination of the two performances result in an engaging track that appeals more and more with repeat listens.
What about Mary J. Blige has contributed to her reign at the top of the charts for so long?
Why would Mary J. choose to collaborate with Drake among all of the young MCs out there?
