What parents need to know

Parents need to know that though this single isn't quite as racy as previous Rihanna singles, there's no mistaking that sex is the topic at hand here. Lyrics like "Make it last all night, take me for a ride" are direct if not graphic references to sleeping together, though it's not necessarily in an irresponsible (i.e., one-night stand) context. Still, the sexually-charged content results in a song that's too mature for young kids.

  • Rihanna demonstrates that she values herself in this song, wanting to be treated like the "only girl."
  • Though Rihanna's had it tough in recent years with her troubles surrounding former boyfriend Chris Brown, she has started to turn things around and concentrate on her career.
  • Not applicable.
  • Some fairly suggestive and definitely steamy lines: "Want you to take me like a thief in the night / Hold me like a pillow, make me feel right."

What's the story?

"ONLY GIRL (IN THE WORLD)" is the first single from the album Loud by R&B power-performer Rihanna. The record is a follow-up to Rated R, the dark and dramatic record that came out of the singer's troubled relationship with fellow R&B star Chris Brown. This track finds Rihanna in a better place than her previous album; the tone isn't as intense and somber. That said, the song still offers enough steamy lyrics about sex to make it too mature for younger ears.

Is it any good?

With a fast-paced synth-beat, "Only Girl (In the World)" sounds even more at home in the dance club than previous Rihanna tracks. The singer's vocals are also particularly strong in this song, finding her belting her heart out in the refrain, especially.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about lines like "Want you to make me feel like I'm the only girl in the world / Like I'm the only one that's in command." What are the potential pitfalls involved when one partner in a relationship has a much stronger personality than the other?

  • How can two people in a relationship balance their particular personalities to ensure that each is being treated fairly and respectfully?

ok
eh...pretty good...does say "hold me like a pillow, make me feel right." other than that, not a terrible song. very different point of view than other rihanna's inappropriate songs. just saying she wants her guy to treat her well. not bad, rihanna.

perfect for 12 year olds
you dont have to take this song as talking about sex. it could be talking about going on a date and just feeling special. i think this song is appropriate for younger audiances like 12 year olds.

Be Honest
It's a catchy song, it really is. I think it's a bit inapporiate and the pictures/advertisements for this song often have Rihanna holding her dress to her body, and that could become a bit graphic. There is a line, "Want you to take me like a thief in the night, hold me like a pillow, make me feel right." with some suggestive themes.
