What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this combines power rock and idealistic, poetic lyrics. There's a lot here for socially conscious teens to sink their teeth into.

  • There's a socially conscious message throughout.
  • A few key words in one song, "Suffocation," "To death, no breath" are clearly meant metaphorically.
  • There are no explicit sexual references.

What's the story?

PAYABLE ON DEATH by P.O.D. was among the most surprising and impressive offerings of 2003. Despite the slightly pretentious goth-influenced, pseudo-Egyptian graphic design, despite the slightly creepy title, and despite the bonus DVD that refused to play in no less than five different machines, the songs are not only completely inoffensive, but poetic and personal.

Is it any good?

There's a refreshingly idealistic social consciousness throughout. The multi-million-selling group boasts guitar player, Jason Truby, whose hard-hitting style complements the band's reggae-influenced songwriting and eclectic musical arrangements. The vocal performances are raw and passionate, but not overdone. There are so many intense elements and influences at work that it would be easy for the whole thing to sound like confusing mush, but veteran producer Howard Benson somehow brings it all home tastefully without restraining the group's intensity.

A bit pompous perhaps, but here's some good music with a positive message.

What families can talk about

Families can talk about the idealistic tone of this album. Why do you think so many other acts veer away from that?

Awesome
Clean lyrics with positive messages. Very well written music. Some iffy violent content, nothing too bad.

Payable on Death (P.O.D.)
P.O.D. is a great band. Listened to them ever since the late 90s. This is also a good band for kids as well. Most of their music sends a clean, possitive message.
