Playhouse Disney Music Play Date

What’s the Story?

Reviewed by Jacqueline Rupp

The Imagination Movers, Ooh and Aah, They Might Be Giants and My friends Tigger and Pooh are just a few of the TV crew featured on the album PLAYHOUSE DISNEY MUSIC PLAY DATE. All the songs come straight from the small screen, with theme songs, instrumentals and dance songs all together on this one CD. Like a musical collection of weekday morning Disney programming, the CD features nearly 30 tracks of singalong series standards.

Is It Any Good?

3

For fans of the Disney Channel's Playhouse Disney, this album is perfect. But for parents, it appears to be much more of an attempt to capitalize on the success of the station's preschool programming than to offer anything new to the world of kids' music. The implied message here is: When the afternoon comes to an end and Playhouse Disney goes off the tube, here's an easy way to keep it going.

There are a few songs on this album that should inspire interactivity, like dance instructions and a musical "Simon Says," but much of the CD sounds like a promo for the Disney shows. Seven of the short 29 tracks are just theme songs to the Disney cartoons and live-action series. The album provides familiar fun, but doesn't do much to inspire creativity or imagination in its little listeners.
