The Princess and the Frog: Tiana and Her Princess Friends (by Various Artists, Compilation)

common sense media says

Princesses sing sweetly, but not the songs you'd expect.

parents & educators say

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that if you're buying this CD to get a compilation of your little princess's favorite Belle, Ariel, and Cinderella songs from the movies, don't. The only well-known song is Giselle's "Happy Working Song" from Enchanted. There are two from the Disney movie The Princess and the Frog, and one from a Broadway production, but the rest are either new or plucked from obscurity. That being said, the songs are entertaining, so if you think your kids just want more songs to sing from their favorite princesses, then this might be worth your time.

Positive messages: Most of the messages are about "daring to dream," finding yourself, and happiness.
Positive role models: Most of the Princesses do display traits of strength and courage, as well as a "go-getter" attitude, but there's still a mentality that happiness only comes with a fairy tale and a prince in the song "I'm Happy."
Violence: Not applicable.
Sex: Not applicable.
Language: "Dumb" in song "I'm Happy" -- ("I kept dreaming better days would come.../that could've been dumb.")
Consumerism: This is a Disney product release to promote movie, Disney Princesses.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
  • Families can talk about marketing. How does advertising make you want to buy things?  Does seeing a movie make you want to buy the soundtrack or get a related toy? How can families combat the marketing frenzy that is constantly on TV and computers?

  • The legend and institution of the Disney Princesses has excited and influenced young girls for many years, and every girl still wants to be a princess. Why do little girls like princesses? Would you like to be one? What do princesses do in movies? What do you think princesses do in real life?

  • Do you think Disney has helped or hurt the image that young girls might have of themselves? Do you think the Disney Princesses are role models? Why or why not?

What's the story?

What's the story?

Young princesses everywhere can squeal in delight at the arrival of a new Disney princess, Tiana, from The Princess and the Frog. Even better still, they can have her and her friends Ariel, Belle, Cinderella, Giselle, Mulan, Pocahontas, Snow White, and Sleeping Beauty singing their favorite songs on the companion CD to the movie, THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG: TIANA AND HER PRINCESS FRIENDS. The 10-track album includes two swinging tunes from The Princess and the Frog, "Happy Working Song" from Enchanted, and a sweeping mix of tunes sung by all the Disney princesses.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

Although little fans in their sparkly dresses and tiaras may enjoy hearing any song from their favorite fairy tale princesses, they could be a bit disappointed when they realize that most of the songs aren't from the Disney movies they know every single word to, let alone every song. The selections are sung well and send mostly positive messages about "daring to dream" and finding who you are, but they aren't the beloved tunes we have come to cherish from our princesses. Cinderella sings a too perky "I'm Happy," and a squeaky Snow White tweets through "Dare to Dream," an inspiring song that loses a bit of its punch because of the vocals. "Beyond My Wildest Dreams," from the Broadway version of The Little Mermaid, is great. It's spunky, well-sung, and entertaining, and both selections from Tiana ("Almost There" and "Down in New Orleans") are easy favorites. If your little mermaids and sleeping beauties just want more of their beloved Disney princesses, then they'll love having them all in one place. (And the enticing, sparkly case the CD comes in.) Otherwise, save yourself the trouble and just get the songs they already know by heart.
