Parents need to know that this album shows a flair for nonsense rhyme reminiscent of Edward Lear and Lewis Carroll.
Good news for fans of talented singer/songwriter Jessica Harper: She's done it again in RHYTHM IN MY SHOES. Like its predecessors (40 Winks, Wonderful Life), this is a collection of witty songs about what children imagine, as well as their everyday routines, all set to stylish, jazz-inspired arrangements.
Fastidious listeners might quibble that a few of these melodies seem to recycle refrains from older songs, but most won't care (especially kids). Parents and children alike will enjoy the spry tempos and cheerful images of piano music in the parlor, chocolate chip cookies in the kitchen, and days filled with pink hats, licorice sticks, and karate lessons. And some of the jazz-style accompaniment is so good, older listeners might think they're back at New York's famed Village Vanguard.
Families can talk about the funny verses. Play "Too Much Snow in Tokyo," and pause when she sings, "Let's take a jet to Tibet!/Bring your pet and don't forget/Your clarinet, your chemistry set, and your marionette!" Help your child write a funny verse about where he or she would like to go next.
