What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this soundtrack is even cleaner than the movie, with very little in the way of questionable content. Like a lot of alt-rock songs, the tunes featured here contain mostly obscure and somewhat nonsensical lyrics that avoid mature themes and graphic language, making this an OK choice for tweens and teens.

  • Like the movie itself, the soundtrack focuses on love and romance, with most songs revolving around expressions of commitment and support for a loved one.
  • Most of these artists stay out of the mainstream headlines, avoiding any public displays of bad behavior.

What's the story?

True to the movie, the soundtrack to the film Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World revolves around the world of alternative rock. This collection of 19 songs runs the gamut of brand-new artists like the Sex Bob-ombs (comprised of the real movie actors), to more contemporary names like Beck, to golden oldies like The Rolling Stones. No matter what their era, however, all of these artists keep it clean in the songs featured here, using no graphic language or mature references. While the movie includes some sexual and violent content that makes it too mature for younger audiences, the clean soundtrack is more accessible to kids.

Is it any good?

All of the tunes on this alt-rock soundtrack are no less than solid, though there are definitely some standouts -- including the awesome cover of Sade's "By Your Side" by Beachwood Sparks; the slow, piercing angst of "Sleazy Bed Track" by The Bluetones; and (of course) the classic "Under My Thumb" by The Stones. There's no doubt that alt-rockers young and old will find something they like here.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about the movie and comic book themes that are reflected in the music. For example, do songs like "Ramona" and "Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl" accurately reflect the way the characters Ramona and Knives are portrayed in the movie and comic? Why or why not?

  • Does the soundtrack make you want to see the movie? Does the movie make you want to buy the soundtrack? Would you buy this CD for the music alone?
