What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this song performed by top Disney performers marks the start of the company's tween ecology project "Friends for Change." The upbeat single lets young listeners know that doing good can make a big difference. While the song doesn't specifically address "going green," the video shows the stars chipping in to do environmentally friendly chores.

  • Showing kids that even small steps make a big difference, this song is all about doing good and inspiring others to do the same. As the lyrics say, "A word is just a word until you mean what you say, a love isn't a love until you give it away, we all got to give, yeah, something to give to make a change."
  • The song and accompanying video show that even the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus care about the environment. From recycling to conserving energy, the pop phenoms are seen chipping in and making it a point to "go green."

  • The song is performed by Disney artists, many of whom have projects (like TV shows or movies) that air on the Disney Channel. The song is a being used to launch Disney's Friends for Change project and tie-in Web site.

What's the story?

Since they've conquered the pop charts, TV ratings, and movie box office, Disney stars like the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus are ready for a few new hurdles -- like global warming, energy conservation, and air pollution. Seem ambitious? Well, the stars -- along with Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez -- are trying to attract some help: all the kids in the nation. SEND IT ON is the debut song from the Friends for Change: Project Green Disney initiative. The year-long project will include a Web site, TV spots, and possibly other music releases.

Is it any good?

You've got to give Disney credit for trying to do some good. Who could take issue with a song about being responsibility and spreading a positive message to friends? This song could probably stand on just it's musical merits even without it's admirable message. Reminiscent of Chaka Khan's classic "Through the Fire" this single is a tween all-star creation with the JoBro, Hannah Montana and other Disney stars representing. The only thing that would give it more adolescent appeal would be a guest chorus from Robert Pattinson.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about celebrities' influence. Does seeing stars like the Jonas Brothers and Selena Gomez doing environmentally friendly things make you want to, too?

  • Is "going green" a hot trend? Do you think Disney is trying to capitalize on the environmental movement as a way to market to kids, or are they just trying to be a responsible company?

  • In the song and its video, Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, and Miley Cryus look like one big happy family. In real life, there have been tensions between some of them. Do you believe it when you see stars treating each other like best friends all the time?

Going green!
This song wants people to take care of the planet such as recycling, save power and water, and use a reusable shopping bag.

Good messages
There are really good messages in this song about how making a small difference to help the earth. I like this song okay, but I bet some tweens will like it because it has their favorite Disney celebrities in it. If it gets kids going green though, then that's a great thing.

OK for anyone, but most teens won't like it.
I hate this song, as to most of my friends. But the message is clean. It also promotes Disney's Friends for Change, which is helping save the Earth.
