What parents need to know

Parents need to know that even if the members of No Doubt don't have all that much to say, who cares? This collection of 10 years' worth of singles is harmless fun.

  • Mostly innocuous, with an occasional refreshing "girl power" moment.
  • There's no violence on this CD.
  • A lot of relationship angst and some flirting, but no explicit sex.

What's the story?

"I'm just a girl -- I'm just a girl in the world -- that's all that you'll let me be." The cutesy-pie lyrics of "Just a Girl" make a crucial point about the restrictions that can come with being young and female in contemporary American culture: living by others' rules, having to worry about the safety of stepping outside. In its own way, the song packs a pointed wallop. The tunes that follow on NO DOUBT: THE SINGLES 1992 - 2003 are peppy, vapid, harmless, and fun.

Is it any good?

The performances of this "best of" album are nothing short of terrific. Gwen Stefani's unique vocal style is perfectly complemented by her band mates' instrumentals. These songs are beautifully arranged and produced. There's nothing new here for hardcore No Doubt fans (well, there's one cover--but it's not a strong point) but obsessive collectors will want this CD, and it's a wonderful starter kit for new fans. If they don't have a lot to say beyond the usual relationship-angst-ridden musings, so what? It's easy to see why all the songs in this collection were chosen as singles. They're really well done.

What families can talk about

Families can talk about female singers who paved the way for Stefani, like Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Janice Joplin, Grace Slick, Pat Benatar, and Chrissie Hynde.

This is all wrong...
First of all just a girl is about gwen having to many friends who are boys. And she said it herself, she accidently made a song about girl power, but she didnt mean that at all. And this is age apropriate for everyone, there isnt anything bad in this whole album!!!

Another collection of singles
Well singles can be good. The Beatles 1 by the Beatles and International Superhits by Green Day were good, but I never liked No Doubt's music and never will so I naturally don't like this album. If you like female fronted bands, Softball, Shonen Knife, or Cub would be a better pick.

Great Collection
No Doubt is my favorite band, and they have released an excellent greatest hits CD. In addition to all their singles, a new song is included. There is no violence or sex, and "hell" is as bad as it gets when it comes to language.
