The Singles Collection (by Britney Spears, Pop)

common sense media says

Second greatest hits CD still sells plenty of sex.

parents & educators say

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that though THE SINGLES COLLECTION features songs from Britney Spears' earlier, less risqué days, it also includes more explicit tracks from recent years -- including her latest single "3," which is all about sexual threesomes. The sex talk is never  graphic, but there's plenty of innuendo, as well as talk of smoking and drinking.

Positive messages: The insatiable fascination with sex and fame threaded throughout this record seem more like a cry for attention from an insecure girl than the sign of a confident young woman.
Positive role models: While Brit has cleaned up her personal act somewhat over the past couple of years, she's still a long way from her sweet and innocent Mouseketeer days.
Violence: Not applicable.
Sex: Classic Britney: nothing super graphic, but plenty of innuendo: "Three is a charm, two is not the same / I don't see the harm, so are you game?"
Language: The word "bitch" crops up.
Consumerism: Not applicable.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: Occasional talk of smoking and drinking.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
  • Families can talk about Britney Spears' troubled personal life. Why would a girl like Britney, who seems to have everything anyone could ever want, have so much trouble finding happiness in her life?
  • What are other ways to get attention besides engaging in risky behaviors?

What's the story?

What's the story?
THE SINGLES COLLECTION is the second greatest hits record (or third, if you count 2005's B in the Mix: The Remixes) from Britney Spears in the last five years -- not bad for an artist who's barely out of her mid-twenties. The latest compilation contains remasters of some of the same classic tracks on the former My Prerogative greatest hits album, including "Oops! I Did It Again," "Baby One More Time," and "Toxic." It also sports hits from more recent years, such as "Gimme More," "Piece of Me," and "Circus," along with Britney's latest number one single, "3" -- her ode to the sexual threesome. The track list parallels the singer's personal life, with the more carefree and fun songs from early in her career giving way to the tunes with sordid sexual themes that have characterized her career in recent years.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

Britney Spears is not just a singer, she's a brand -- known (and loved) for everything from her dancing to her image -- so she can't be judged on the merits of her lackluster vocals alone. Problem is, plenty of other brand-name artists do everything else Britney does, too, only they do it better. For example, Madonna may not be the best singer, either, but her daring image overhauls have resulted in songs that reflect a more intriguing variety of musical styles. And while Lady GaGa has also released her fair share of dance tracks, she infuses them with powerful vocals and more musical interest than Brit's ubiquitous synthesizer. Compared to tunes from these and other creative and talented counterparts, Britney's formulaic songs sound less appealing.

great for toddlers
I teach a daycare, and the kids dance to that music.

perfect for older kids
I think this is a good message of sex and things kids under the age of 10 should not view.

Good album, except for the song "3"
This is Britneys second "Greatest Hits" album, and this one is the best one so far. The only problem is that her song "3" is on this album, and that song is pretty nasty. Great album, though.

Brittany's music has a great beat, and is fun to listen to. But some of the videos are inapropriate and she is aterrible role model for children.

willowfaierie, read this.
You run a daycare and your kids dance to it. I know why. Because the rhythyms are really cool, and the kids don't pay attention to the lyrics. But when they get older (12)(13) and they listen to the song again, they'll pay attention to the lyrics and notice the music is horrible!
