What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this is processed pop music at its most ordinary, including a sort of simpering sexuality from a young woman who takes herself way too seriously. Musically, you (and your teen) can do much better.

  • How much do we really need to know about this woman's marriage? Other than that, there's nothing offensive at all.
  • No violence.
  • Advertised as a celebration of the artist's recent marriage, this CD oozes coy innuendo and a bit of explicit sex.

What's the story?

Jessica Simpson is a very pretty girl with a very nice voice, but that's about all there is to IN THIS SKIN. She wants us to know that she reached deep into her heart to create these songs, that they came out of the happy glow surrounding her marriage to Nick Lachey of 98 Degrees. The title song is heralded as a groundbreaking anthem to the insecurity felt by most teenagers. It's about loving yourself in spite of the part deep inside of you that feels unlovable, and teenagers will relate. But this important "message" song (like others offered here) would work better if it were written and delivered with a bit of wit and charm. This woman takes herself WAY too seriously.

Is it any good?

On her official web page (www.jessicasimpson.com), Jessica boasted that this was the first project on which she's had a chance to really express herself -- she wrote or co-wrote most of the songs and had a great deal of control over the project. Unfortunately, the production sounds perfunctory, the keys random (many songs seem too high for her pretty voice), and the songs themselves are boring. Perhaps she could have used some experienced guidance after all.

What families can talk about

Families can talk about Simpson's reputation as a singer. Did going on MTV help her record career? Do you think that's why she did it?

My favorite cd!
This cd is so good! I recommend it. Theres not problems with sexual references or anything. I think it's a good cd for 13+. She has such a good voice and is very talented and she uses her talent in a good way.

10+
This cd is for chicks and chicks only. It's got a few hits but nothing special. I hope she stays true to her Christianity.

Very good pop album
Jessica Simpson's "In This Skin" is a pleasant pop offering. Jessica can sing, and she shows off her impressive range on the ballads. There's nothing too explicit here, though "Sweetest Sin" and "Forbidden Fruit", although there are excellent songs, are non-explicitly sexual. As for commercialism, an ad for Jessica's beauty product is included with the album, as well as a DVD with scenes from her MTV show.

I agree- sweetest sin is the only "adult song" and your kids wont even "get" what it means. Good CD and I love her voice, plus it doesnt hurt to know she was a virgin till marrage.

She can sing!
Sure, she may be on every single magazine cover, but Jessica Simpson, in my opinion, is great. She's got a NATURALLY great voice to boot. "Sweetest Sin" is probably one of the more explicit songs, but I think it's a great CD for ages 12+.
