What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this is the soundtrack to the popular Disney Channel TV show Sonny with a Chance, which stars Camp Rock-er, Demi Lovato. The songs have positive messages; many encourage kids to live their dreams and view their lives as a work of art. There's one song titled "Kiss Me," but it's a sweet ode to young love -- OK for kids -- if you can handle the giggles that might ensue. Lovato's "Me, Myself and Time" has already hit #1 on Radio Disney, and dreamy Sterling Knight (StarStruck), is also featured on the album.

  • Several songs talk about chasing your dreams, and living your dream. "Living the dream, tryin' my best not to blow it." "Work of Art" is a song about making your life your own masterpiece:  "If you follow your heart, life is a work of art."
  • "Work of Art" tells listeners that "you're never too young or too old to dream.../you create your own masterpiece."

What's the story?

With Hannah Montana on the way out, there's room for another Disney Channel starlet to take the crown as the tween queen of music and TV. Camp Rock's Demi Lovato shows she's got the chops, pipes, and just the right amount of quirkiness to be in the running as the star of the hit Disney Channel show SONNY WITH A CHANCE. The soundtrack features nine songs from and inspired by the show, including the theme song, "So Far, So Great" as well as the voice talent of Lovato, Sterling Knight, Tiffany Thornton, and Allstar Weekend.

Is it any good?

When she's not touring with the Jonas Brothers or recording another hit album, Demi Lovato plays Sonny Monroe, the star of a tween sketch comedy show in Hollywood. In its second season, and nominated for a Nick Kids Choice Award, the show features some great music from a talented cast. Lovato belts it on "Me, Myself and Time" singing, "I'm livin' the dream, and I know it, tryin' my best not to blow it." "Hanging" lets tween idol Sterling Knight dazzle in a funky, pop beat about waiting patiently for a girl, while "Work of Art" is a poignant, rockin' rally that says, "You're never too old or young to dream, you create your own masterpiece." There are only nine tracks, but they certainly leave you wanting more -- an optimistic forecast indeed for Sonny and friends.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about the connection between the soundtrack and the TV show. Does the fact that this show stars a well-known singer make you want to buy the album?

  • The song "Work of Art" talks about creating your own masterpiece, and making your own life a work of art. What are some ways that you do this with your life? What things do you like to do or create?

  • There are a few songs that talk about being in a relationship, or having feelings of love toward someone. Have you ever had strong feelings for someone? Did you tell them? Do you share your feelings or concerns with friends? With your parents?

Clean songs, but not that great. Buy Suddenly Yours by Allstar Weekend instead
Perfectly clean songs with good messages and role models. Be sure to listen to Come Down With Love by Allstar Weekend, it's the only song I enjoyed on this CD, and it's by some amazing, talented guys who I have met!

GREAT!!!!
For a Disney album, this one is pretty good! It has motivational songs by Demi herself. And trust me, those songs are actually really awesome! I love Work of Art and Me Myself and Time.

Perfect for kids and tweens
I love it . The songs are amazing and I enjoy listening to Sterling's, Demi's and Tiffany's songs though I'm not a big fan of All star weekend.

Love?
What's with the large amount of love songs? The show doesn't even center around love. Besides that, it's fun to listen to but not worth it to buy.

Garbage
Ironically, my kid hates this garbage, and I'm very glad that she agrees with me. However, if other kids like it, I suppose it's not my place, nor my kid's place to be snobbish or smooth nosed. It's totally harmless... Which is also it's biggest drawback. I think a parent would be doing good by his children to just say "NO, I WON'T HAVE THAT SQUIRRELY VOICED CLONE CLAIM MY HEARING".
