SOS Saving OurSelves: Help For Haiti (by Various Artists, Soundtrack)

common sense media says

Family-friendly benefit CD offers strong messages of hope.

parents & educators say

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this CD is loaded with popular music that's also very kid-friendly. Perhaps because it was part of a national telethon, or maybe due to the fact that it was for disaster-relief, but whatever the reason, even normally brash artists like Busta Rhymes and Pitbull are toned down and family-friendly. The album has a very positive feel to it as well, with lots of songs about hope and coming together. Plus, it features Justin Bieber!!

Positive messages: Songs of encouragement and community empowerment dominate the album: "Everything would be alright...I would tell Van Gogh that he was loved, there was no need to cry...there would be no black and white, that's my dreamworld, more than a dream, I want to live in my dream, I said let's dream, dream on."
Positive role models: The album shows popular music stars coming together for a good cause, which might inspire listeners to help as well. "We doin' it for Haiti tonight y'all!"
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: Wine is mentioned in "Dreamworld."

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
  • Families can talk about stars doing good. Did the impressive show of support for the people of Haiti from those in the entertainment community inspire you to help? What do you think of artists who volunteer their time for these types of projects? Do you think they genuinely want to help, or do they do it for the good publicity it generates?
  • Talk about music lyrics. Is it okay to listen to clean music by artists that generally produce iffy content? What are your family's rules about what groups and artists you're allowed to listen to? Why do you think artists performing at this concert had to watch their language?
  • Talk about the earthquake disaster that struck Haiti. Does it make you frightened that something like that could happen where you live? How did you feel when you watched the news coverage of the event? Do you think it's still important to help the people of Haiti even though the earthquake there isn't the top news story anymore?

What's the story?

What's the story?
The SOS SAVING OURSELVES: HELP FOR HAITI telethon first aired live from Miami on several cable networks on February 5, 2010. This album draws from the best performances of that night to create a benefit LP to further the musicians' fundraising efforts. Those on the album's line-up include Justin Bieber, Robin Thicke, Pitbull, and Mary J. Blige. Wyclef Jean plays a big role while Chris Brown stages another comeback appearance, and blast-from-the-past artists such as Monica and Kirk Franklin take center stage.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

As bad as the news from Haiti has been, this album is a little ray of sunshine to a grim situation. The songs all bring powerful messages to the stage, with tracks such as "Dreamland," "Mercy, Mercy, Me," and "Strong Will Continue." But the artists themselves really add to the optimism, with impassioned messages of hope combining with their energetic performances. Look for an awesome live version of "Baby" from Justin Beiber featuring Ludacris and a lively intro from Wyclef Jean.
