The brilliance of Joss Stone's SOUL SESSIONS lies in simple, classic arrangements of obscure soul tunes, performed with intensity and passion. Joss Stone wraps herself completely around these songs, not afraid of old-school sentiment or style. The lyrics' social messages, though old-fashioned, seem appropriate for the genre, and her singing -- not the lyrics -- is the star of the show anyway. The tasteful musicianship features strong rhythm tracks, smooth gospel-influenced keyboards, and angel-choir background vocals.
Is it any good?
She's a little scary, this English teenager, with perky good looks and a truly amazing set of pipes. This album is extraordinary partly because it's hard to believe that anyone this young could sing with such authentic-sounding, heart-tugging soul. Stone could sing her grocery list and it wouldn't matter, but she also got very lucky--she's backed up by a team of seasoned musicians and singers who know how to help put a song across without taking over. Joss Stone has an incredible gift, and it will be interesting to see how her artistic vision develops over time.
