What parents need to know

Parents need to know that aside from frequent use of the lyric "mad as hell," the single "This Time" is pretty harmless. It lacks any other explicit language as well as references to substance use, sex, or violence. Though the song contains a fairly strong overall message about giving the boot to a bad guy, it's a generally acceptable pick for kids old enough to watch American Idol.

What's the story?

One of the favorite contestants from American Idol Season 10, Pia Toscano has released a debut single, "THIS TIME," that focuses on breaking up with a guy who's done her wrong. Though the lyrics include a strong message about being "mad as hell," it also ends on a fairly positive note about valuing yourself and not being taken for granted: "I'm gonna free myself, gonna make a change / And like a butterfly, I'm gonna spread my wings / Been crying for too long, now I'm drying my eyes / Grounded for so long, now it's time for me to fly." Aside from the repeated use of the word "hell," the track includes no other graphic language or adult content, resulting in a tune that's OK for tweens.

Is it any good?

Lots of people thought Toscano got a raw deal with being voted off so early in Idol's top 12, and listening to this song, you can understand why. The same vocal talent she showed during the competition shines through here, backed by a catchy pop hook that will undoubtedly earn the tune a spot in widespread radio rotation.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about whether or not this was a good choice of debut single for Pia Toscano, one of the top 12 contestants on the 10th season of American Idol.

  • The debut single from the season's winner, Scotty McCreedy, was a very sweet and positive love song. How could Toscano's decision to release a tune about love-gone-bad help or hurt her career?

  • Do you think Toscano, who was voted off early in the top 12 competition, got a raw deal? Why or why not?

about being strong, in control, and independent
It's pretty good, any kid of any age could probably listen to it. It just that, you don't really want your 7 yr. old repeating "hell". In a nutshel, its just about a woman who knows how to be independent when she needs to.
