What parents need to know
Parents need to know that if you don't want to hear the "F" word, don't buy this album. If you don't mind this particular word, you'll find some exceptional rock & roll and an all-too-rare girl-power message on this CD.
What's the story?
TRY THIS by Pink is an interesting, well-produced, and empowering CD -- if you can get past the liberally used "F" word. You have a choice, of course, between the limited edition DVD-inclusive CD, the Parental Advisory explicit CD, or the Edited CD. Whichever one you buy, you'll be hit head on with Pink's "F**k You" attitude, so it almost doesn't matter which you choose."Save My Life" is a sad recounting of a young woman's struggle with drugs. It's real and honest in a way that most drug songs are not. Pink has learned to use the material gleaned from her troubled past to entertain, and she does it very well.
Is it any good?
With a wink and a cynical sneer, Pink attacks this excellent collection of songs with intelligence, energy, and surprisingly soulful depth. In collaboration with Rancid's Tim Armstrong, who produced the project, her vocals growl and shimmer. She's a strong performer with an empowering message -- adversity can be overcome -- You don't have to let 'em get you--you really don't. This CD is not for everyone, but there's a lot to love about it, if you're comfortable enough with a certain profane word or two.
What families can talk about
Families can talk about portraying genuineness in music. Does that necessarily mean using offensive words? Do these words add to the effectiveness of a song or simply distract and disturb?

A disapointment
"Try This" isn't a bad album, but it is a huge disapointment when you consider that it follows "M!ssundaztood", Pink's wonderful second album. The clean version of this CD isn't that bad. The f-word shows up, but it's only obvious on "God is a DJ". On "Last To Know" it is edited pretty thoroughly. The obscene hidden track is not on the edited version. "Oh My God" is sexual but not too explicit. However, all in all Try This is skippable.

There are some bad messages about being Trouble, using people, S & M, Dreams about sex, Lying to your mom for a boy, Going on Drugs again, and writing love songs and having sex when you still aren't sure if you are in love yet. This album has name calling to (Stupid F**k) and plenty of swears F**k, S**t and a**. The songs with bad messages and swears are- Trouble, God is a DJ, Last to Know, Tonight is the Night, Oh My God, Catch Me While I'm Sleeping, Save My Life, Try to Hard, Humble Nabors, and Love Song. The ones that are okay for ages 8+ are "Walk Away"- about not staying in a relationship if you aren't happy. "Unwind"- About going with your gut and trusting you. AND LAST is "Waiting For Love"- it is a sad song about a lonly girl praying and waiting, it will let people know they are not alone. So some sexual stuff, bad swears, and mild drinking. Allthough this album doesn't have a perfect message, swearing and S & M, but behind all of that, the message is to follow your heart and walk away.
