"Wake Up Call" (CD single) (by Hayden Panettiere, Pop)

common sense media says

Heroes star innocently flirts with others.

parents & educators say

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this star of Heroes is venturing into the music world with her first pop song. The lyrics are shallow (threats to flirt with other guys to make a boyfriend jealous) but they're also innocent and never get anywhere near graphic. The video shows Panettiere in cleavage-showing outfits dancing suggestively. Since this song is part of a Candies' ad campaign, she's decked out in the brand, but you wouldn't know that just by watching the video.

Positive messages: Threats to flirt with other guys to make a boyfriend jealous: "I think I'm gonna have to cheat/to keep your eyes on me/but maybe if I make you jealous/you'll finally start to wake up" and "It seems like I gotta do wrong/to get your attention/but maybe when I call this man up/you'll finally start to wake up."
Violence: Not applicable.
Sex: "You think because you bagged me/you don't have to work at all" is as bad as it gets. The video shows Panettiere in cleavage-showing outfits dancing suggestively.
Language: Not applicable.
Consumerism: The song was released as a single for the brand Candie's.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: "You don't buy me drinks" is the only reference.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
Families can talk about actors crossing over into music. What do you think about this trend? Do you think that just because someone is successful on screen, she'll automatically be successful on the mic? Do you think that's fair?

What's the story?

What's the story?
Scarlett Johansson. Raven-Symone. Heidi Montag. And now, Hayden Panettiere. These women are just a few of the many who are trying their luck with music. "WAKE UP CALL" -- Panettiere's first single -- is a pop tune about making a boyfriend jealous by flirting with other boys. The heavy dub influence mixed with light rap channels Rihanna and Gwen Stefani.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

There are many actors who should stick to acting. And -- this may be tough to grasp, but -- Hayden Panettiere (yes, the cute blonde star from Heroes) may have a supplemental future. "Wake Up Call" is her first foray into the music world, and she's actually good. The dub isn't too out of place and she hits all the right keys vocally. The only forced part is the light rap breakout -- with her blonde tresses and sly smile, Panettiere just can't make the tough-girl image work for her. But, nonetheless, the song is going to definitely work for many kids.

Okay song
It's an OK song, and her singing is okay. But I heard another song from her and I like that one better.

A little catchy
I'm not a big fan of this song, but it's not bad. It's a bit catchy. But the lyrics are about getting revenge on an exboyfriend which is a bad message. But the way she's singing sounds more humorless than serious. Also one line goes, "You think because you bagged me you don't have to work at all". This song is fine, but I think Hayden is a better actor than she is a singer.
