What parents need to know

Parents need to know that while this song is largely innocuous, it does include a few more grown-up words like "loathsome," "bitter," and "sucker" that kids may inquire about.

Positive messages: The message of this song -- that you should try to enjoy yourself and not take everything so seriously -- is positive one for "kids" of any age.
Positive role models: The verdict's still out on whether Sliimy will make a good role model: his debut song is clean, but his stints on the Britney Spears and Katy Perry tours leave the question open-ended. In this song, he portrays himself as a positive role model for slowing down and enjoying life.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
  • What messages can both kids and adults take from this song about "dreaming" and having fun despite all the seriousness in the world?

  • Why would more adult musicians like Britney Spears and Katy Perry be into Sliimy's music as well?

What's the story?

What's the story?

WAKE UP is the new single from French pop singer Sliimy -- a French slang word for "skinny," in a nod to the artist's waif-like physique. The track includes a lot of silly, nonsensical lyrics loosely centered around a theme of allowing yourself to experience all the fun of being a kid -- even if you're no longer one. For example, "I'm kinda lazy, you're in a hurry, you scare me, now I'm well aware of this / You talk about business, it's an illness, what I mean / You must dream a little bit, like me." Though the lighthearted song sounds like a kids' tune, the singer has attracted the attention of decidedly adult pop stars like Katy Perry and Britney Spears, opening for both artists on their recent tours. Nevertheless, a fun, claymation-like video for the song is currently running on ZuiTube.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

It's easy to see why this song would appeal to kids as well as grown-ups like Britney Spears and Katy Perry: the tune has a cheery synthesizer tone that draws kids in but also sounds similar to some of the other adult alterna-pop music that's come out of France from bands like Tahiti 80. Still, it's a bit too cutesy to go very far on the mainstream adult charts, with some circus-like sections that will likely be too much of a stretch for anyone other than young children.

Not a bad song, but the album is not child appropriate.
Be cautious - the rest of this album is quite inappropriate.
