What parents need to know

Parents need to know that "Written in the Stars" features some bragging and swagger, but the lyrics are pretty tame overall, featuring only one "f--k" in the unedited version. Both the edited and unedited version also have "damn" and "hell." There's no violence other than the line "I got more hits than a disciplined child" and a reference to a "massive attack." The song's generally positive message is about making your dreams come true, making this track an age-appropriate choice for teens who like rap.

  • A positive message about making yourself stand out in a crowd: "I used to be the kid that no one cared about / That's why you have to keep screaming 'til they hear you out."
  • Encourages listeners to keep striving for their dreams.
  • One line mentions "I got more hits than a disciplined child." Another refers to a "massive attack."
  • Not applicable.

What's the story?

"WRITTEN IN THE STARS" is a single by British rapper Tinie Tempah that celebrates the notion of working hard to accomplish your dreams. Though lots of rappers talk about this concept in their songs, Tinie does it in a cleaner way -- avoiding a lot of profanity and explicit references to sex, substances, or violence. Aside from one "F" bomb and a fleeting mention of having more hits "than a disciplined child," this tune is free of iffy content. It's an inspirational pick for older kids who are looking for some motivating music.

Is it any good?

Taking a cue from rapping/singing songs like "Rocketeer," "Written in the Stars" includes snappy rhymes by Tinie and guest vocals by Eric Turner. Backed by strong synth- and guitar-based beats, the combo hits home, making you reach for the repeat button when the song ends.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about the concept of making your dreams come true and how to apply it in everyday life.

  • Why do people set goals for themselves? What's one goal that you want to accomplish in the next month? The next year?

  • How is this song similar to but also different from the typical rap single?

Airplanes-like single makes little sense and little substance.
It is exactly like Airplanes. It has a rap overtune but a pop chorus. Unfortunately, this song just doesn't live up to itself. The chorus makes little sense and so do most of the metaphors. Not worth buying.

This song is cool... the only bad languagee they use in damm. come on now its in the Bible right? Come on now? The only thing that i would have to say that is bad is maybe the meaning but im unclear other than that this song is okay.

Great for the tweens and above
This is a phenomenal song! It encourages being motivated to get your voice heard and appreciated, "Everyone's a kid no one cares about / you just gotta keep screamin' til' they hear you out" The only issue is the one use of f**k. "I got more f**kin' hits then a discipline child". But at age 10, most kids have heard this at school so, really, who cares!

Oh my gosh I just loooove the British accent! He's a great rapper -- Eminem should be worried! Over all it's a great song about reaching for your dreams and not giving up til you reach them. One reference to the ghetto. Mostly clean, except for d**n and h*ll. Let your kids listen to clean rap!
