In the Zone (by Britney Spears, Pop)

common sense media says

Britney as provocative and sexually suggestive.

parents & educators say

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Britney wants to make it clear that she's no little girl anymore. This CD is both provocative and sexually suggestive in lyrics such as "She naked, she soaking wet, strip tease like a mmm, drip, sweat" or "You lookin' good when you're half dressed, Just let me give you one last test." The song "Touch of My Hand" talks about masturbating.

Positive messages: Are parents really saying to their daughters, "Be like Britney!"?
Violence: There are no violent references.
Sex: Lots of sexy innuendo, not to mention moaning ("I don't really wanna be a tease/but would you unzip my zipper please?"). One song is about masturbation.
Language: Depends on what "Twittle-ittle-ee" (an overused lyric on this CD) actually means. No language stronger than "sex drive" or "a-- shaking" -- unless you count the moaning.
Consumerism: Britney herself is a product of corporate commercialism, but there are no blatant tie-ins here.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: Though Britney is finally old enough to get into bars, she sticks to sexy moaning on this CD.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
Families can talk about what they think motivates Britney to sing so frankly about sex. You can use Britney's out-there sexuality to start a conversation about sex, such as what the difference is between singing about sex and engaging in it.

What's the story?

What's the story?
On IN THE ZONE, Britney delivers pseudo-sexuality throughout -- much suggestive moaning, a few suggestive lyrics -- that might make some younger teens (and parents) uncomfortable. But the whole thing feels so artificial to begin with that it's hard to take the sex seriously. A soulful, earthy vocal by a truly great singer would be far sexier, even without the suggestive lyrics.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

Poor Britney gets eaten alive by most of the well-produced and well-written songs on this album. She simply doesn't have the voice for them, and even a duet with Madonna can't save the day. Die-hard Britney fans will want this CD, and may enjoy the nicely produced dance tunes. Everyone else might consider trying them out at the karaoke bar instead --most likely you'll do a better job on the vocals.

Sexy but too much for some.
Ok. We all know Britney is a sl**. But this album showcases that with great booming beats and sexy (not to mention realistic) moanings. Some fail to meet standards, like "Me Against the Music" and "Shadow" but the rest is all good. The lyrics are suprisingly amazing! Especially "Touch Of My Hand"-- the standout. "Everytime", "Breathe On Me", and "Showdown" are other highlights. Parents, kids should know what masturbation, sex, and oral sex is before letting them buy this album. You don't want to hear "I don't really wanna be a tease/But would undo my zipper please?" or "Bump bump 'til the break of dawn" blaring from a 6-year-old's room, right? Be careful, although, parents, if you care for Britney, buy it buy it buy it!!!!

this cd is just sad
another cd i hate i like her old songs like oops i did it again and baby one more time she actualy has talent with those songs

I expected more got less.
The album is not bad but still has some many weak tracks such as Shadow, Brave New Girl and I've Got That. If you want to buy it for your kids then I don't recommend you. The album is really sex oriented. Such as Toxic, Breahte On Me, Touch of My Hand just to name a few.

Good but trashy
"In The Zone" is a good album musically but lyrically it is possibly the worst pop album of 2003. Sex is a huge issue- "Touch of My Hand" is about masturbation and several other songs are sexual. Britney's frequent breathing in the songs doesn't help. There are some bad words. On "Outrageous" Spears describes her material possessions and several tracks talk about wild partying. Although kids my age listen to this album it really isn't appropriate.

Good CD but has quetionable qualities
I liked this CD. I'm 16 and I thought that it was borderline appropriate for kids my age. I think that parents should be warned that some of the lyrics and material talk about sex and drinking, such as the song "Touch of my Hand". There is also some mild language in the CD. If you can get past some of the objectionable material, this is a good CD with good dance music. I like listening to the CD and the upbeat songs put me in a good mood.

Britney's second failure...too sexual, too stupid.
This album is terrible. This was pretty much the entrance of Britney Spears, it's shocking how many people got hooked on. I was only four years old when this album came out, I didn't know about Britney Spears until three years ago. This album is boring, and stupid. Not to mention the theme of sex. Sex, that's what this album is and is about. The only song off of this album I like, actually love, is Toxic. Toxic is about the only appropriate song on this album, which is mostly about kissing, not sex. And she is metaphoric in Toxic, it's not really first heard as innuendo when you listen. She does use the old term "hit", but no one really uses that term anymore. She also says things like "ride". This album isn't even really catchy, again, the only catchy song is Toxic. After this album was released, she first started to get popular. Hate it so much.

love it!!
ive had this album ever since i was like 10!!

this is typical britney music, i like the collaborations that she did with old and new artists. she is trying new things in her album muscially and artistically. as far as britney's image goes, how come no one is making a big fuss about beyonce? she's the same age, also wears sexy clothing, and dances in a similar suggestive manner. being a girl who grew up listening to madonna, i don't think that it was harmful to my ideas of womanhood, thoughts of sex, or the way that i dressed. as a dancer, i enjoyed this album.

Boredom again yells a war cry
Talk about dull. Pop is plain out dull and hurts my ears. With bands like Britney Spears supporting bands like Simple Plan and Good Charlotte, I protest! Superstars don't exist anymore. Everyone's style is changing. I read a review saying that Britney and Good Charlotte were destined to be the next band-everyone-likes. If so, armaggeddon is coming.

IN THE ZONE
Being a Britney Spears fan I loved IN THE ZONE. It was a complete change for Britney. Her blatant sexuality is somewhat overwhelming with lyrics like "I don't really wanna be a tease, but would you unzip my zipper please?" or " And when you come don't get too hot..." both from a song all about sexual activity called "SHOWDOWN". Or in the song "EARLY MORNIN'" Britney talks about "shaking her a** in the streets its mornin" and "wanna hook up, do ya momma live there, we can hook up at the hotel" and "i met a guy named Joe...what happened next, well you don't wanna know, oh, oh". Finally, in "BOOM BOOM" she states "oh boy..you look so D**n sexy", "I got that boom boom that you want..watching me all night long (moan) hurry up before its gone". But in the mess of sex with anonymous Joes, alcohol abuse/ hangovers, are sweet songs of love....and more sex, club bumping hits.

Come on...
People are just giving this CD low ratings because it's Britney Spears. But come on, it's not that bad. Sure, her vocals aren't that great, but they're a lot better than Lindsay Lohan's or Hilary Duff's. A lot of her songs are easy to get addicted to, and you get get over the mediocre vocals.

One of my favorite albums of all time!!!
Sexual Content: Nothing excplicit. The worst of it comes from "Showdown", "Breathe On Me", and "Touch of my Hand". Lyrics such as "I don't really wanna be a tease but would you undo my zipper please...two bodys synchronizing...when you come don't get too hot...strip tease mmm soakin' wet...my sex drive" may be qustionable. Violence: Not an issue. Language: A hell here, an a** there. No issues. Social Behaviour: Just fun dance trakcs- no need to overreact. Commercialism: Not an issue. Drugs/Alcohol/Tobacco: Despite the fact all the songs take place in a bar- clean as a whistle. In the Zone On for 12+ Really fun dance album to have fun to. Really a good pick me up. Enjoy!
