What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this show is an edited-down version of the venerable 60 Minutes news-magazine series. Instead of the traditional hour-long format that provides the parent show with its name, this series is just 30 minutes long -- but the same in-depth investigations are featured. There’s not much in the way of primary iffy content, though stories can touch on everything from violence (including murder) to drinking/drugs and sex. Plus, many of the stories are complex and may not appeal to young viewers.

  • With its in-depth reports, 60 Minutes helps reinforce the message that, done well, journalism is an important part of democracy.
  • The 60 Minutes journalists are some of the best in their field and have earned plenty of accolades for their quality reports.
  • Some of the news stories discuss violence (killings, etc.), but little is shown on screen.
  • Some stories may touch on sex-related content in a news-related context.
  • Not applicable.

  • Some of the news stories discuss drugs and drug-related crimes, but little is shown on screen. The context of the stories makes it clear that drugs can be dangerous.

What's the story?

Venerable TV newsmagazine 60 Minutes has won accolades for delivering, year after year, quality, in-depth journalism. It has owned its Sunday evening timeslot for decades, and for good reason: It tells fascinating stories, and its reporters are some of the best in the business. 60 MINUTES ON ID does all of the same things, but faster, in a version edited down to just a half an hour.

Is it any good?

If you like 60 Minutes, there’s no reason not to like this version, too. It’s the same stories repackaged into a shorter show and hosted by correspondent Scott Pelley. Instead of two or three long-form pieces, expect just one or two. But otherwise there’s no difference. It’s still some of the best investigative journalism on TV.

Most kids aren't likely to be interested, but teens who keep track of current events or enjoy the news may like the show's complex, deeply reported stories ... even if they are only 30 minutes long here.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about TV news. 60 Minutes has been on the air for decades. Why does its format work so well?

  • Who do you think this version of the show is intended to appeal to? The same audience as the original series? Another group?

  • Does it make sense to cut the show down to 30 minutes but leave the name
    unchanged?
