Parents need to know
Parents need to know that this show tries to shock. It was created by the creator of Family Guy and appeals to the same audience. The lead character is a conservative C.I.A. agent who unquestioningly loves his country and his gun. The show has rampant sexual humor, some political jokes, and an alien character that drinks too much. Nothing in the series attempts to be realistic.
Families can talk about Stan Smith's unflinching patriotism and machismo, and how they often blind his judgment. They can also discuss the family's repeated attempts to come together amidst each episode's zaniness.

Trying to put a spin on the new genre of animated sitcom parodies, Seth McFarlane’s frenzied animated comedy series, AMERICAN DAD, has potential in its lead character Stan Smith. A true-blue C.I.A. agent with the jaw of a superhero and the reasoning of a rock, Stan leads his family like he would defend his country, with zeal and not a lot of forethought. His family often pays some sort of price because of it. In the end, everyone learns a valuable lesson about life that's forgotten in subsequent episodes.
Is it any good?
American Dad has the ingredients to be another cutting-edge series like The Simpsons. It aims to push buttons but instead falls flat and is more likely to fall back on some predictable toilet humor, and it’s not for kids any more than Family Guy is. However, the show's greatest fault is that it's just not as funny as McFarlane's other series. Über-patriot Stan Smith could be a hilarious figure, a red, white, and blue Homer Simpson. Yet the Smith family is less endearing than the Griffins of Family Guy. This gives the audience less reason to laugh and less reason to care. The slapstick is less witty, the characters are underdeveloped, and overall the show feels forced. Thus the attempts to shock and the resulting laughs don't add up. Ultimately, American Dad is just another unremarkable sitcom.
