What Parents Need to Know

This review of Ben 10 was written by Pam Gelman

Parents need to know that this 10-year-old superhero battles villains using physical violence. If parents have strong feelings about not letting their kids watch cartoons containing violence, then this one isn't for them. When facing evil, Ben is able to morph into one of 10 different alien creatures. This transformation is accompanied by dramatic visuals, dialogue, and music that may frighten younger viewers (especially those who don't understand the fantasy vs. reality concept). Some kids may be alarmed when the villains attack, punch, throw, shoot, and do whatever it takes to stop Ben. On a positive note, Ben relies on his Grandpa Max and cousin Gwen to help him get out of dangerous situations.

Families Can Talk About

Talk to your kids about the media in their life. We have more tools and tips that can help
  • Families can talk about what makes this kid a hero. Is it his ability to morph into aliens and fight off villains, or is it that he takes on challenges and asks for support when needed?
  • Is it ever OK to fight back? When are other responses appropriate?
  • If kids are interested in Ben's alien-morphing abilities, use this opportunity to introduce science-fiction books and films.

More on Ben 10

What’s the Story?

Ben Tennyson (voiced by Claudia Schmidt) is a relatable 10-year-old who gets frustrated with his family, has challenges with peers, and gets caught up in problems that he can't solve alone. The difference is that his solution to solving problems starts with using his Omnitrix, a watch-like device that he found and wears. On it he can choose which one of 10 different aliens he wants to become. Though ultimately he's still Ben, just transformed into an alien form with superhero powers.

Is It Any Good?

If parents have strong feelings about not wanting their kids to watch violent cartoons, this one isn't for them. The animation is rich and colorful, inspired by the look of Japanese anime. Dialogue between main characters Max, Gwen, and Ben isn't up-to-par with the visuals, though, and needs to be updated to reflect how kids really speak to each other. Still, overlooking the violence, BEN 10 gives kids a peek into the world of science-fiction, along with exciting action and creative animation.

If you don't talk to your child about aliens, who will?

To see my full review, check out thehownotto.blogspot.com/2010/03/god-andcartoon-network.html I'm a Christian who has watched every single episode of the show, not just five minutes. I take issue with some of the scientific accuracy and some of the behavior of role models in the show, but overall you will find that if you are willing to sit down with your kids, this show lends itself well to being an educational experience. Not only are there key episodes in which Ben must learn from his mistakes, overall the show focuses on the idea that a normal person can and should use what they've got to bless other people. And where are you going to find children's sci fi that does that? NOT good to watch if your children really hate each other. Too much 'sibling' rivalry in the show for that. You should DEFINITELY watch it if your child's friends watch it, so that you can tell him and he can tell them how Ben learns to obey his grandpa. Put good ideas into his head, and they'll spread. Anyway, check out thehownotto.blogspot.com/2010/03/god-andcartoon-network.html for a much more detailed review.

Completely inappropriate for our little guys

I watched this show for five minutes with my son to see if it was appropriate, since he had already seen it at a friend's house. I saw an alien killed in a gladiator-style ring and another stabbed in the shoulder by Ben10. Anyone who thinks that's appropriate for a five-year-old needs parenting classes. What makes me the most angry is that they are marketing this show directly to our young children, which means all of my son's friends watch the show and buy all the merchandise, which THEN means my son doesn't understand why he can't watch every day. It's too bad most networks don't care about moral values for young children and instead look at the bottom line... can anyone guess what that might be?
