Parents need to know

Parents need to know that this Hogan Knows Best spin-off follows Hulk Hogan's daughter Brooke as she strikes out on her own. Unlike the original series, this show focuses specifically on Brooke's life, rather than the family's interactions -- though there are discussions about her parents' very public divorce and her brother's legal problems. Expect lots of bikini-clad young women, some sexual innuendo (including references to gay sex), some mild language ("hell," "damn"), and some pretty wild parties (including underage drinking).

Families can talk about the popularity of "real-life" family TV shows. What makes a family entertaining enough for television? Do you think the families featured on these shows act the same way when the cameras aren't there? Families can also discuss what happens when an apparently "perfect" reality show family seems to fall apart. Should these problems become entertainment for others? How have things changed for the Hogans since Hogan Knows Best?

Message

Social Behavior:

Brooke lives on her own but remains connected to her family. The show includes discussions about her parents' contentious divorce and her brother's legal problems. Brooke's friend/roommate Glenn is gay.

Consumerism:

The interiors of stores like Target are sometimes visible during shopping sprees. Brooke's music is heard occasionally.

Drugs/Alcohol/Tobacco:

Alcohol consumption (including underage drinking) is sometimes visible.

Violence

Brooke's dad supplies her with various self-defense mechanisms (tasers, mace, etc.) and discusses how they can keep her safe.

Sex

Lots of young women and men in skimpy bathing suits. Hugging and kissing are sometimes visible; there's also some stronger sexual innuendo. Brooke and Glenn discuss looking for "hot" guys. Hulk Hogan makes references to "erections" and catching venereal diseases (but within the context of avoiding them).

Language

Mild; words like "hell" and "damn" are used occasionally.

What's the story?

Following on the heels of Hogan Knows Best, which chronicled the family life of pro-wrestling star Terry "Hulk" Hogan, BROOKE KNOWS BEST focuses on oldest Hogan daughter Brooke -- who at 19 has decided to move out of her protective parents' home and into a Miami penthouse. An aspiring singer, Brooke must learn to cope with roommates, balance a budget and her time while, and build relationships with music professionals ... all while confronting the many temptations that South Beach has to offer. But even though she's on her own, she's still close to her overprotective father and the rest of the Hogan clan.

Is it any good?

From getting tattoos to checking out the dating scene, Brooke Knows Best is chock full of coming-of-age moments. But while Brooke's parents continue to offer their daughter sound advice, their presence on the show is often overshadowed by conversations about their public and somewhat contentious divorce. And then there are her brother's well-publicized legal problems (stemming from his involvement in a near-fatal car accident).

Although in many ways dealing with these issues forces Brooke to recognize that entering adulthood isn't always about partying and having fun, they don't exactly make for great entertainment -- and, in fact, many of the big conversations come across as heavily scripted. And the truth is that without Brooke's quirky, over-protective dad hanging around, the show really isn't very amusing. But die-hard Hogan family fans may like getting another look behind the scenes.

Stupid AND Boring

Just more crud from a family now famous for offering low-brow entertainment. Don't let young kids watch this; the heavy sexual content (in fact, it seems to be the main purpose of the show) is inappropriate for youngsters. Middle aged kids will be a little confused, older teens bored, and neither entertained. The Hogans should be shown the door, professionally, personally, and possibly biologically.
