Parents need to know

Parents need to know that this Miami-set spin-off of the original CSI is just as violent and gruesome as the original. While the series focuses on solving crimes, the violence, sexual scenarios, and flashy scenes of fast cars and big houses offer a sensational, glamorized backdrop to the search for justice. An overwhelming amount of the crimes involve women as victims.

Families can talk about the show's violence. Why are women so often the crime victims? Does this match up with reality? Families can also discuss how science and technology are used to solve crimes. Does this series make teens more interested in what's going on in science class? Is forensic science something they might want to pursue as a career?

Message

Social Behavior:

Investigators are smart, moral, and from diverse ethnicities. Criminals range from white-collar crooks to brutal convicts. Violence against women is a common, almost-glamorized theme.

Consumerism:

Subtle product placement, usually around technology.

Drugs/Alcohol/Tobacco:

Occasional drug and alcohol use by criminals. Rare alcohol use by main characters.

Violence

Violence can be graphic, gruesome, and unsettling. Women are often victims.

Sex

Sexuality is ever-present in the constant beach/bikini shots. Also, sex is often an element in the crimes being investigated.

Language

Occasional swearing: "ass," "bitch," etc.

What's the story?

Reviewed by Sierra Filucci

Like CSI: NY, CSI: MIAMI is an offshoot of the original, Las Vegas-set CSI. As in that series, the action here follows the city's crime scene investigators as they attempt to solve crimes using forensic evidence. The team employs science and technology -- as well as good training and smarts -- to unpeel layers and sort out scenarios until they reveal the truth. Unlike the largely nighttime setting of the original CSI, CSI: Miami plays out in the daylight, with sweeping views of gorgeous blue ocean and busty, bikini-clad women on the beach. Like CSI's Gil Grissom (William Petersen), CSI: Miami team leader Horatio Caine (NYPD Blue's David Caruso) is an intense, wise, and solemn man.

Is it any good?

3

Staying consistent with the CSI franchise, the crimes the Miami team investigates can be gruesome and scary, and are not recommended fare for younger viewers. Many of the crimes involve women and sometimes children as well. The action largely follows the investigation -- rather than focusing on playing out the crime on the screen -- but viewers still see dead bodies, tortured victims, and violent crimes occurring in cinematic flashbacks.

While CSI: Miami has its avid followers, unlike the original CSI's Grissom, Horatio doesn't compel the same attention and affection. And the rest of the team seems less of an integrated whole than a bunch of independent characters -- some more interesting than others.

There's more violence on the news

I've watched every episode at least twice. In many of the episodes, the violence has already occurred or occurs within the first five minutes. The rest of the show is about the CSI team solving the crime. Insofar as actual violence goes, kids can see more violence on the evening news. There are also social issues that parents can discuss with their kids (such as suicide or stranger danger). I think TV-14 is overrated. Younger teens and some tweens should be able to handle most episodes, with parental guidance of course.

Hot Guys! And Action!

I love watching CSI Miami! There is so much you can learn! Plus there is really cute guys, and who wouldn't want to watch a movie with action and hot guys?! There is so much that I can realate to. Plus it gives you inside looks on stuff like sarority houses. And it shows how girls and guys interact! That, most girls my age wouldn't care about, but I really enjoy watching guys flirt with girls that are already dating. And girls from the clubs hitting on the CSIs. I love this show, and so do lots of other people!!!! And my favorite actor plays as a main character!!! Adam is sooooooo hot!

Not as good as the original CSI, but better than New York...

Living in Miami, I know that most of this stuff in the show never happens, but this show is worth a quick watch when there's nothing else on TV at 10:00 on Mondays. David Caruso is great as the "loner" cop who interrogates their subjects with vicious swagger. The rest of the cast is great too.

Great show

CSI Miami is a great show with a great cast. Its one of the only shows that I actually follow.Although the murders can be somewhat disturbing it shouldnt be a problem for the average 13-15 year old.
