Parents need to know

Parents need to know that the kids in this action cartoon series travel to a parallel universe called Lyoko to battle digital monsters controlled by an evil computer. Fight scenes are limited to the kids' visits to Lyoko, but the computer creates super viruses that possess everyday objects and animals in the real world and make them do its bidding. Although the adult role models are easily outsmarted by the main characters, the upside is the respectful friendship that allows the kids to be confident and self-sufficient.

Families can talk about the idea of fighting an enemy that can influence our lives by infiltrating what's around us. How can someone or something we can't even see pose a threat to our safety? Does the media and/or the Internet enable those who might want to hurt us? How can you protect yourself from this kind of threat?

What's the story?

Reviewed by Emily Ashby

CODE LYOKO is the story of four boarding school friends who, despite very different personalities, rely on each other as they muddle through the process of growing up. The new-age twist to this timeless tale is that the foursome alone knows of the existence of XANA, a villainous computer in a parallel world whose aim is to annihilate Earth. In a secret computer lab within their school, Jeremy, Ulrich, Odd, and Yumi battle XANA's efforts with help from Aelita, a digital resident of Lyoko. Genius Jeremy leads the foursome as the techie who can "virtualize" the others into Lyoko, where each has unique powers.

Is it any good?

4
Kids will like the battles in Lyoko -- each plays out much like a video game. The monsters' hits on the heroes deduct "life points" from them, and once they've run out, they are "devirtualized" back into the computer lab. Jeremy can also reverse time to maintain the secrecy of the foursome's efforts on Earth, but in doing so, he strengthens XANA's powers. Strategy and teamwork are themes throughout the series.

Great show for kids and adults alike

A great show. Here's everything you need to know: Sex: Yumi and Ulrich almost kiss, and there's a lot of talk about dating in some episodes. Violence: Some fighting done in a virtual world. Language: None. Drugs/Alcohol: None. Commercialism: Has a videogame based on the TV series, but no advertising in show. Social Behavior: It's implied Yumi's parents fight. Yumi is also from a different culture, and there are several main female characters. Sissy is very mean to the Lyoko crew, even stealing Ulrich's diary. Odd is a troublemaker. The show mostly teaches about friendship.

Best show out there.

I have watched all four seasons of Code Lyoko and must say that I have not seen a show that is at all like it. This show has everything from battles that are good but not intense and comedy that just flat out makes you laugh. It is awsome and can be watched by all ages. Some say that it is a baby show because of its lack of violence compared to Teen Titans, but in the end the storyline is better, and the characters have a better attitudes. When it comes to violence you can't find much of an issue. Most fighting is done against weird virtual monsters, and when they do attack a human they make sure you can't see it (except for in the fourth season sometimes you have to look really close to see it). When it comes to sexual content, at times the femal characters are seen in bikinis, but this changes by the third season and the don't wear it anymore. There are flirtatious jokes in the show, but they are more kids styled jokes, not teengager style. Also, there is a little bit of inappropriate behavior to authority, but as time progresses the characters build a relation with their teachers, and they always learn from their mistakes about messing with their teachers. Only once is it considered a joke and that was to avoid another X.A.N.A. attack. Basically, if your child is at least seven they will be able to enjoy it and will have a marvelous time watching it as the story unfolds and the enemies become stronger and the heroes have to overcome them through teammwork, which seems to get better as time progresses.

(just read)

I myself have never seen this show but my friend, Caleb, is constantly raving about it. That must count for something. It doesn't seem to sound very appealing but he's a super computer obsessed genius gifted person so he likes the fact that they use computers and he likes cartoons and stuff a lot too. I must just talk about him for a moment: He's made his own video games, networked his, and other computers, and he owns about 6 comoputers, all of which he built himself (except one). So, yeah, he's obsessed. that's why HE likes this show.

A very good sci-fi show for today's kids.

A very good sci-fi related show for today's kids. The futuristic technology, in my opinion, keeps kids interested in the show because they can possibly relate to the technology they see in their everyday world.

The only reason I rate this at TV-Y7 is that, with the talk and travel between the two dimensions, it could get confusing for anyone younger. Other than that, I think it is great. I even like to sit and watch it with my kids!
