Parents need to know

Parents need to know that this series focuses on adult relationships that are marked by conflict. The intimacy issues of married couples -- including (in)frequency of sex -- often take center stage, so parents watching with kids should gauge young viewers' readiness for the mature subject matter. Characters are affectionate but also frequently fight and express resentment.

Families can talk about arguing. When does it help -- and when doesn't it? When you do fight with a family member, how does it make you feel? How do you patch things up? Can people be angry with each other and love each other at the same time?

Message

Social Behavior:

Some characters are intolerant and set in their ways (which is usually meant to be funny). Gender roles are pretty traditional. Some characters put others down routinely, a situation that's played for laughs. Other jokes are more good-natured. Not much cast diversity.

Consumerism:

Drugs/Alcohol/Tobacco:

Infrequent drinking.

Violence

People get angry and yell a lot, but they don't hit.

Sex

Sexual innuendo and jokes. Discussion of adult relationships (Ray does a fair amount of badgering Debra for sex), but only kissing is shown onscreen.

Language

One character likes to say "holy crap." "Damn" has been used as a positive remark. "Hell," "ass," and "bastard" are sometimes used.

What's the story?

EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND is touted as a family sitcom; in this case, "family" refers to grown-up characters (and viewers). Stand-up comedian Ray Romano stars as sportswriter Ray Barone, and Patricia Heaton plays his wife, Debra. Their three kid serve primarily as scenery, barely reacting to the constant bickering and crises that surround them. Central to the comedy are Ray's opinionated and intrusive parents -- Frank (Peter Boyle) and Marie (Doris Roberts) -- and his brother, Robert (Brad Garrett), who all live just across the street. The extended family throw insults around as if they can't stand each other, but viewers seem to identify with the Barones, a family that fights as passionately as it loves.

Is it any good?

3
Episodes often insightfully focus on Ray's perceived shortcomings and missteps as a husband and father. But the series also uses stereotypes as a jumping-off point: self-involved career man who doesn't get enough action in the bedroom, frustrated housewife who doesn't get enough help with the cooking and cleaning, meddling mother-in-law who doesn't get enough respect. That said, the cast is stellar and plotlines shed light on universal human insecurities, such as doubting that your spouse still finds you attractive as you grow older.

Funny family show

I've been watching Everybody Loves Raymond for years, and I've only seen a few episodes that should've been given anything higher than a PG rating. My entire family watches this together. It's fun, funny, and it depicts a slightly wacky family that I think anyone could compare their own to. Fine for teens of all ages, and mature 10-12 year olds.

Hilarious! Teens and up.

A few episodes are 100% based on sex, and one episodes second or third line is I wanna have sex! But it is still OK for teens that know how to handle it.

One of the Few Good Sitcoms

Sitcoms have become so vapid and base that I quit watching them years ago. I assumed this one was the same, until I saw it in-flight with my son, who assured me I would like it. And so I certainly do. I get such good belly laughs from this show, and I'm grateful for the DVR because I've probably seen all the episodes in the past year. I am most sad to see that this May (2005) will be the end of it.

Not for kids

I can't see letting teenagers watching a show about marriage and sex.

Good Sitcom as long as you understand it...

Everybody Loves Raymond is a great sitcom about a man called Raymond played by Ray Romano who lives wit hhis wife Debra, his brother Robert, his mother Marie, and father Frank. There is swearing in every episode, but can be ignored most of the time. There is not much violence except for people yelling at each other. Some episodes are based on sex, but if you understand it, then you'll laugh at this funny comedy. I say 10+, although my brother enjoys it, and he's 7.

Don't watch obsessively

For quite a while, I watched repeats of this show daily, and after a while, i got so sick of it I didn't even want to watch it anymore. Good for the first little while, but don't wear it out of you won't apprecite the humor anymore.

Very funny show

"Everybody Loves Raymond" is a hilarious show about Raymond's (played by Ray Ramano) struggles with his family members, including, his never-pleased wife, Debra (Patricia Heaton), his brother Robert, his over-protective mother Marie (Doris Roberts) and his rude father Frank. The show details the many, many arguements the family has over just about everything. There are some mild sexual references and some language. Characters drink sometimes. Deep down, the family loves eac hother, but this is not always apparent from the episodes.
