Hosted by Mike O'Malley and Moira Quirk, GUTS is a classic Nickelodeon game show that throws out the standard trivia-question format in favor of sports, competition, and action. In each episode, three tween competitors face off in extreme-sports challenges like obstacle courses and one-on-one duels. Challenges usually involve climbing tall heights and jumping off ledges, but contestants always wear helmets and protective gear. After three rounds, the player with the highest standing attempts to scale a large climbing course known as the "Aggro Crag." If the player succeeds, he or she receives a glowing piece of the crag as a trophy.
Is it any good?
GUTS is different from many other sports competition series and game shows because it mixes male and female athletes together -- and the female players often win. This sets a good example for young athletes, who see that both men and women can excel in sports. GUTS also promotes good sportsmanship, because all of the contestants get a medal at the end of the episode and are applauded for their efforts.
Overall, GUTS is a fine choice for young athletes, especially those who are into skateboarding, rock climbing, and fast-paced action sports. Even though the show is old (it originally ran from 1992 to 1995 and still airs in repeats), the action has remained just as exciting. GUTS is an entertaining, positive outlet for action-minded viewers -- just make sure that they know that extreme sports like these always require a helmet.
