Parents need to know

Parents need to know that Lizzie and her friends are constantly grappling with notions of social acceptance and what it takes to be a "cool kid."

Families can talk about how tweens should deal with peer pressure and what they think about the eternal search for popularity.

What's the story?

Reviewed by Ellie Gettinger

The action in LIZZIE MCGUIRE follows the title character and her two best friends, Gordo and Miranda, as they navigate the treacherous territory of junior high. The three are pretty supportive of one another and help one another out of silly and (emotionally) painful scenarios. Despite disagreements, they always end up coming to the aid of their friends. Added to the ensemble are the usual suspects for a live-action kids’ show. Lizzie's parents provide perspective as episodes come to a close, but much of their energy is focused on Lizzie's bratty younger brother Matt.

Is it any good?

4
The Lizzie McGuire depiction of friendship is fairly realistic and very positive. Within the narrative of the show and through a plot device that allows viewers to hear what Lizzie is thinking, the audience gets a good picture of what it means to grow up for both boys and girls.

While the Disney Channel shows no signs of taking Lizzie McGuire off the air, the show is coming to an end after star Hilary Duff refused Disney's offer. The fifteen-year-old star will not be growing up with the show, which may disappoint many tweens. As the show still airs at least seven times a week, your kid will know Lizzie age 12 to 14 very well.

AWESOME!

This show is clean as a whistle. There is NOTHING bad. Lizzie is a teenage girl, all her behavior is normal! Wanting to fit in, wanting to look good and impress people, is how all teenage girls feel! Hello, I would know... I am one. Lizze sometimes gets mouthy with her parents (what teenager hasn't??), but in the end realizes how much she needs her family and friends. This show is all about learning lessons. This show ROCKS! I am sad that they don't show it anymore.

Lizzie McGuire

Sexual Content (Not an Issue): Some kissing and flirting. Violence (Not an Issue): Some slapstick-style humor. Language (Not an Issue): Squeaky clean. Social Behavior (On): Diverse characters, including a Jewish one and a Mexican-descended one. The episodes normally have some kind of a moral lesson. Commercialism (Not an Issue): Part of a huge marketing empire for Disney. Drug/Alcohol/Tobacco (Not an Issue): One episode takes place at a teen party, but nobody is drinking.

Good for little kids!

For girls ages 5-10, this is a great show. It's pretty true to middle school... it's not as inappropriate as parents are saying. Young kids won't look as deeply into it as parents are thinking...

The boys were looking at her boobs

There was a show that they were talking about the girls assets. Her bust and bottom and told the boy to stop looking at them and look at her face. Isthis what we should be teaching children my daughter is 8 and I do not want her learning about that as the kid was 6 that was staring and her bust how do they let this happen on Disney. I thought it was safe no more disney is cut off in my home.

Unrealistic

There were no big issues of violence or drugs, etc., but it is not worthwhile viewing. It is very similar to other shows of its type. It is somewhat unrealistic with Lizzie's overwhelming desire to be perfect. Some girls may try to follow her example a bit too closely. Lizzie's parents are pictured as naieve losers, and lizzie seems to wear alot of makeup.Popularity and clothes were overemphasized. This is not, for the most part, real life.

Lizzie is Bad Influence

We let our 8 year old watch this show and no more than 2 weeks later we had a mini Lizzie in our home. She began talking like her and treating us the way Lizzie treats her parents- like idiots. Not a good influence at all. I see the intention- but know your child. Mine was too motivated to be just like Lizzie- YIKES

Give me Lizzie, you keep Hillary

Our whole family enjoys watching this program. This is the way middle school should be for our children. I love it! I am not, however, too fond of the Hillary Duff music videos that are played on Disney Channel now, or her movies.

I felt a little annoyed.

I hate how Lizzies' parents are portrayed on this show. Mom and Dad are like buffoons when it comes to Lizzie and and her brother.

Inappropriate influence

This show tries to teach kids lessons about growing up. However, I think it misses the mark. A girl that age should not dress so sexually and wear makeup. If the show wants to send a positive message for young girls, Lizzy should have parents who care enough to ensure that she dresses well. Furthermore, Lizzy’s character could have been played by someone a little more average looking than Hillary Duff.

Bad role models

While the ethnic (Jewish and Mexican) diversity is nice, everything else about this show is awful. No girl that age should wear so much makeup or such revealing/tight clothing. She's mean to other kids and rarely atones for it.
