What parents need to know

Parents need to know that some of the stunts the performers undertake are dangerous and shouldn't be tried by young viewers. The series is based on competition, but there's not a lot of mean-spiritedness here.

  • The show is based on competition.
  • Some of the feats -- unicycling and blindfolded archery -- have the potential for violent outcomes.
  • Not applicable.

What's the story?

On ABC's MASTER OF CHAMPIONS, six athletes compete for the chance to go to the final round, at which point one of them is named the week's winner. These athletes participate in unusual challenges such as drift driving, unicycling along an obstacle course, and blindfolded foot archery. Some contestants are young; the age cut-off to participate is 10 and up. Radio personality Chris Leary hosts the program (Lisa Dergan-Podsednik co-hosts), which is judged by Olympic gold medalists Oksana Baiul and Jonny Moseley and baseball legend Steve Garvey. Each week, the studio audience narrows the field down to the top three competitors, and then the judges (or "Panel of Champions," as they're called) pick the champ.

Is it any good?

Perhaps it's because the program takes place in a studio, but Master of Champions doesn't have the same dynamic feel as fellow reality shows like Fear Factor and Survivor, and it's not as engaging as peer America's Got Talent. That's why, although families can enjoy watching the show together -- and kids will definitely be entertained by the crazy feats the competitors undertake -- adults might come away feeling bored.

What families can talk about

Families can talk about competition. What makes a good competitor? Why is sportsmanship important? Do you think this show would be as interesting if the stunts weren't so outlandish? What's your favorite stunt? Are there any you'd want to try?
