Why We Rated This off for Ages 16 and Under

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

Big surprise: No role models or positive messages here. Very little discussion about or examples of real intimacy or deep emotions. Conversations between friends and lovers often send confusing messages. Friends call each other "idiots," and lovers play emotional games with each other. Women (and sometimes men) are discussed as interchangeable -- valued primarily for their looks and sexual availability. Very little cast diversity; everyone is thin and/or athletic, and all are white.
  • Violence:

Plenty of personal conflicts and angry, tearful arguments.
  • Sex:

The show is almost exclusively about dating and having sex. Semi-graphic discussion about sexual practices. Mentions of condoms and safe sex. Some deep kissing and groping shown. Lots of skimpy swimsuits and beachwear.
  • Language:

Plenty of cursing, with only the strongest language bleeped. Unbleeped: "ass," "bitch," "hell."
  • Consumerism:

    Not an issue.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

Regular alcohol consumption. Drinkers all look very young, though whether they're of legal drinking age isn't discussed. Lots of talk about intoxicated adventures, often sexual. Constant discussion of "partying" (AKA drinking).

What Parents Need to Know

About Maui Fever

Parents need to know that this MTV reality show is all about twentysomethings looking for sex and relationships. Most of the action occurs on the beach, when cast members aren't wearing very much. Everyone on the show is very thin and/or athletically built, showing a very limited range of body shapes. The dialogue and action is almost exclusively focused on pursuing casual sex, discussing the attractiveness of potential mates, and planning parties. Friends sometimes betray each other, and people generally treat one another poorly.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about friendships and relationships. Do you think you treat your friends well? Have you ever felt bad about the way you treated a friend or a significant other? Is it OK to date several people at a time? What does it mean to date responsibly? Families may also be able to use the show as a catalyst to talk about important issues like sex. Does a show like this trivialize sex? Would anyone want to watch it if the cast members weren't hooking up all the time? Why or why not?

    stupid haoles

this show is a very big disgrace to the hawaiians and local people! if they are going to make a show about locals base it on locals and not people from the mainland.all they do is party and drink and have sex and that is not an attraction! it makes our islands look bad!
