Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 14–18

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

Stanger promotes her service as a way to find real love, but the show sends the message that money can buy it. The Millionaire's Club is a an elite service for wealthy men, many of whom are immature and/or have extremely sexist ideas about women. The women are interested in finding men who can offer money as well as a relationship. The women are primarily Caucasian; the men are mostly Caucasian, but there are some Asian and Latino clients.
  • Violence:

    Not an issue.
  • Sex:

Plenty of innuendo, including strong references to sexual activity. Women are expected to dress "sexy" for prospective dates and when attending matchmaking events (though actually having sex during matchmaking dates is a no-no). Frequent discussions about women's breasts and backsides. On one occasion, a man's penis is referred to as a "ding dong danger."
  • Language:

Audible language includes words like "ass" stronger terms are bleeped. Occasional use of Spanish curse words (like "cojones").
  • Consumerism:

L.A./Hollywood venues like the Hollywood Racetrack and trendy eateries are visible during VIP cocktails and dates.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

Frequent consumption of alcohol (wine, beer, mixed drinks). Stanger claims that her service offers a high that's better than any drug.

What Parents Need to Know

About The Millionaire Matchmaker

Parents need to know that this voyeuristic matchmaking reality series offers mixed and sometimes troubling messages about using money and material wealth to find love. It also introduces some sexist attitudes about women and dating, and there's some drinking and strong sexual innuendo (including various references to sexual activity and male genitalia).

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about how the media portrays dating and relationships. Does the media create unrealistic representations of how people are supposed to look, feel, and act in order to meet someone special? Families can also discuss professional matchmaking. How many people have success using matchmakers or dating services? Do online matchmaking sites really work? Did you know that some cultures still rely primarily on matchmakers to bring couples together?
