Why We Rated This on for Ages 3 and Up

The good stuff

  • Messages:

The series introduces preschoolers to Chinese culture and the Mandarin language through repetition and interactivity woven into age-appropriate storylines. Each episode also explores a lesson in social-emotional skills like patience, anger, and listening and demonstrates positive methods of coping with conflict. The lone adult figure is a great role model, often gently interceding when issues arise among the young friends.

    Great show for toddlers.

Parents need to know that this series gives good messageds to the pre-school audience and teaches some pretty good chinease. While kids 2-7 will like it...this might not be enjoyable to the Tween and Teen audiences.

    Empathy Education

This show is along the same vein as Dora in terms of it's presentational style. What really sets it apart is the emphasis on learning to be aware of the feelings and perspectives of others. The integration of Chinese words in nice, but unlike the Spanish in Dora it is harder to practice this with the kids because I'm learning for the first time in the episode with them.

Great for 4 and up, not so great for younger ones.

Kai-lan is GREAT! Her friends who exhibit the bad behaviour...not so great. My 2 year old constantly comes away with the bad behaviour instead of the corrected behaviour!

    Good show for young ones!

It helps teach a different language. It is a positive show, not too keen on the bad attitudes some have, but it does show how to solve the problem.

    Great for kids.

My son loves this show. I like that it helps teach him Chinese, he loves going to the restaurants and trying to talk to them :). He also likes helping trying to figure out problems. I am not to down on the attitudes they have sometimes cause all children go through that and they show them how to handle it correctly.
