Why We Rated This off for Ages 14 and Under

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

In Paris' world, looks matter -- a lot. To prove it, she gets rid of the plainest contestants right off the bat and gives the remaining 14 mandatory makeovers. Paris is on the hunt for a hot friend who can party hard. But her new BFF must also be "classy" and "keep it real." Don't fit that criteria? Buh-bye.
  • Violence:

Some verbal sparring, but nothing physical.
  • Sex:

Prospective BFFs are asked about their sex lives as part of the interview process. When asked how many guys they've slept with, one of them fires back, "Tonight?," while another replies, "Not enough, I'm sure." Female contestants also show lots of skin, and they're encouraged to maintain a sexy image, but Paris stresses they shouldn't go "porno." An androgynous male contestant wears makeup and claims to represent both sexes.
  • Language:

"Bitch" (and its plural form, "bitches") is used a lot. Some contestants swear more than others, but one has a particular penchant for peppering sentences with "s--t" and "f--k" (both of which are bleeped).
  • Consumerism:

Paris communicates with contestants via BlackBerry, offers makeovers courtesy of Fred Segal Beauty, and gives winners expensive presents from marquis retailers like XIV Carats. Editors from In Touch magazine also make an appearance.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

Because partying is a job requirement, contestants are often shown with an alcoholic beverage in hand -- whether it be shots, beer, or hard liquor.

What Parents Need to Know

About Paris Hilton's My New BFF

Parents need to know that the overall message here -- that being fabulous in Paris Hilton's eyes requires a girl (or guy) to look hot, party hard, and work the red carpet -- is troubling, to say the least. Paris says she's looking for a classy friend who can show she's "real," too, but outward appearances seem far more important. There's also some light swearing (Paris and her prospective friends regularly refer to each other as "bitches," but "s--t" and "f--k" are bleeped) and moderate luxury brand name-dropping. Teen girls, especially, will soak this up, so parents -- beware.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about whether Paris really needs to launch a televised search for a new best friend -- and whether she might have other motivations, too. After all, is it really possible to find someone you connect with on a "best friend" level through an overproduced reality show that doesn't provide time for any real intimacy? Teens: Do you admire Paris in general, and would you want to be her constant companion? Why or why not? Who are your best friends? What qualities do they have that make them so special to you?

Disrespectful to some, not the best in quality, but ok

'My New BFF' is a show that I enjoy, but is it appropriate? No. Verbal Abuse between contestants and disrespect towards others not just from contestant to contestant but from Paris to contestant. The contestants are supposed to love Paris, but if Paris doesn't love them they are all ok with it. They admire an awful role model like herself, getting famous for nothing (except being an heiress) and then getting out of jail because of her money and fame. Consumerism, yep. It's obvious. Language: Of course. Many slurs that don't just SEEM disrespful, they are 100 percent wrong and mean. Drinking socially. Messages are awful. If Paris doesn't like you, you're gone. Doesn't that seem a tad shallow?

    • Inappropriate language

    • Negative message
    • Negative role models

Paris does sexual behavior with women, one male contestant wearing makeup and explaining that he represents both male and female. Bad language including B*tch and F*ck.

    GREAT

This show is really good! I would try not to miss any of the episodes! It is about Paris Hilton and she goes on a search to see who has it to be her new best friend! Every week they have this game where each of the contestants compete and who ever one got to do something fun with Paris! This show also shows another side of Paris because all we see is this bad girl and when she really isent!
