Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 14–18

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

While the guys do undergo inspirational emotional transformations, they're basically becoming "pimps" in the process.
  • Violence:

    Not an issue.
  • Sex:

The whole point of the show is to transform a bunch of self-described "losers" into roving Casanovas ... with the implication that once they change, they'll be rewarded with lots of sex. Over the course of the season, characters are shown cavorting with strippers and kissing and making out with women, some of whom are wearing little more than lingerie.
  • Language:

"Damn," "hell," and "ass" are used, but more serious offenders are bleeped out.
  • Consumerism:

    Not an issue.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

Alcohol is treated as an important tool in the art of seduction.

What Parents Need to Know

About The Pick-Up Artist

Parents need to know that this male-centric makeover series sends a message that's iffy at best. True, socially awkward teenage boys might learn how to start and carry on a conversation with a girl. But they might also come away thinking that the only reason they should is so that they can get into her pants later on. The show's emphasis on "scoring" with women (rather than just meeting them for the sake of being social) makes it a poor choice for family viewing and a clear no-go for kids. Plus, alcohol is treated as an important tool in the "art" of seduction. On the bright side (such that it is), the language is surprisingly clean.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about why it's so difficult for men and women (or even teen boys and girls) to really talk to each other -- especially when it comes to romance. Why do women usually expect men to make the first move when it comes to dating? How has that notion changed over the years? Is the way a guy looks as important as the way he carries himself or conducts a conversation? And what is it about Mystery that makes him so successful at charming the ladies?

women are not animals, mr. mystery

as an avid makeover show watcher, i found the plot to be very typical sounding and seemingly harmless-- take a bunch of women-clueless, socially awkward men and turn them into chick magnets with a little help from a master. the students are taught the ancient art of picking up women with tecniques and tricks that will make him much more attractive. generally i don't find the show unbearable to watch, but i took strong offense to the way master pickup sensei "Mystery" trains the men to think about women. our fine host refers to a group of women in a club or bar etc. as a "set" (comparable to a "gaggle of geese", a "pride of lions", a "pack of wolves"). women are treated like brainless animals that are drawn to a men that ooze charisma and style like moths to light. the students are not being taught that we women are sensible, intelligent, and aren't ALL drawn to cheesy nitwits like these boys. i can tell the show has a potentially good intention, but there are more things that i have to shake my head at than good qualities.
