Parents need to know

Parents need to know that there have been several incarnations of this show, including some "lost episodes" that were aired in 2003 under the title Ren & Stimpy: Adult Party Cartoon. Although the original series (which still airs in syndication and is available on DVD) is tamer than that version and was definitely marketed toward grade-schoolers and tweens, between the frequent implications that the main characters are gay and their constant abuse of each other, it's really a much better fit for older tweens and teens. What's more, the show -- which first aired in 1991 -- was ground-breaking in its willingness to disregard social conventions by depicting bodily functions and adding a significant amount of gore to its cartoon violence. The episodes that air on Nicktoons usually offer a somewhat watered-down version, but they still aren't meant for kids.

Families can talk about the trends that this series started (or at least heralded), contributing to the current media landscape in which there are far fewer limits than there used to be. Was the show's influence good (South Park) or bad (arguably, South Park), and what affect has it had on the rest of society? Is society different because we've grown used to watching animated creatures defecate on TV?

Message

Social Behavior:

There's some South Park-esque lampooning of commercialism and narrow-mindedness, but for the most part, the characters just come across as mean. Lots of humor involving bodily functions (which are presented pretty graphically, for a cartoon).

Consumerism:

Drugs/Alcohol/Tobacco:

Some episodes include humor based on the affects of drugs and alcohol.

Violence

Heavy cartoon violence, with more malice than you'll find in most 'toons. When Ren slaps Stimpy (as he does often), the sense of fun found even when Tom is trying to eat Jerry is absent.

Sex

There's often heavy sexual content for a cartoon that, in theory anyway, is meant for kids. There's also a suggestion of a homosexual relationship between the title characters (particularly in the episodes on DVD).

What's the story?

Reviewed by KJ Dell'Antonia

In its early-'90s heyday, THE REN & STIMPY SHOW was ground-breaking TV, offering cartoon gore, bodily functions and fluids, crushed heads, oozing brains, and an ongoing fascination with the controversial aspects of sexuality, particularly homosexuality (which isn't portrayed very attractively here). It pre-dated South Park and has a lot in common with Bart Simpson's beloved Itchy and Scratchy Show. It was never pretty, but it was fascinating and often funny. Those early, decidedly mature episodes can be found on DVD, but Nicktoons now airs repeats of a somewhat-defanged version of the show, which included the less-offensive original episodes and those made later, without creator John Krisfaluci. (The show's evolution can be seen in its animation, which goes from intentionally rough to much more polished and plushie-toy ready.)

Is it any good?

3

No matter what format it's in, Ren & Stimpy is still too edgy and adult for younger children. Teens may enjoy the scatological humor and the occasional attempt at social satire, but Ren & Stimpy's once-shocking take on classic cartooning is old hat now. It's been done, and it's been done better.

This show is made for more mature adults

It doesnt make sense, and it refers to some bad things, listen to the happy joy joy song, its a family show because these subjects fly over your kids heads, but its kind of messed up.

a must see

Was a good show I loved it! I have 2 words to say to Nick: Curse you! I do understand they behaved wrongly in some episodes but Nick didn't have to go take this show away!

I'm suprised they air this on a kids channel.

This show is funny but it's pretty bad for a kids' cartoon. Not for little kids. Tweens and teens are fair game, though.

This cartoon is pretty good!

I'm usually rarely impressed by many cartoons, but Invader ZIM, Courage the Cowardly Dog and Ren and Stimpy (I'm leaving some out, I think), are the ones who have come the nearest to making me go "Wow!" But they didn't. They are decent anyways. This is one of the cartoons I grew up watching and I grew up loving. It's not really for kids and the violence makes me flinch. A lot of sexual humor in it too. Apart from that, I love it. Some people won't, but hey, I love anything original and different. I haven't seen an episode in years, but from memory, I remember some scenes that absolutely terrified me. The Ren and Stimpy airing now is mostly clean though. I think the DVD version is "Uncut". Or so I hear. Hey, I recommend it. Just watch out for somethings if you have kids. (If you don't like stupidity and wacky plots, don't watch this.)

The Best Cartoon Ever!!!

Before SpongeBob, Atomic Betty, Wow Wow Wubbzy, and a whole slew of new and modern animated/children's series, there were neater, funnier cartoons in the 1910's to mid 1990's. The cartoons/children's series were Felix the Cat, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, Mickey Mouse (and other pre-celebrity Disney stuff), Bosko, Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry, Popeye, Crusader Rabbit, Pink Panther, Droopy, Screwball Squirrel, Woody Woodpecker, Muffin the Mule, Howdy Doody, Gumby, Casper, Ruff & Reddy, The Flowerpot Men, Andy Pandy, The Woodentops, Gigantor, Stingray, Kimba the White Lion, Davey & Goliath, Flintstones, Huckleberry Hound, Yogi Bear, Jetsons, Top Cat, Speed Racer, Guzura, Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, Scooby-Doo, Josie & the Pussycats, The Electric Company, Harlem Globetrotters, Noddy, Hoppity Hooper, Tennessee Tuxedo, Tamagon the Counselor, Rocky & Bullwinkle, Wacky Races, Retro Sesame Street, Batfink, Bagpuss, Speed Buggy, Jabberjaw, Chorlton & the Wheelies, DangerMouse, Count Duckula, Peanuts, Garfield, Smurfs, Reading Rainbow, Heathcliff, Hippo & Thomas, Bananaman, Willo the Wisp, Roobarb, Manfred, Ludwig, Morph, Babar, Underdog, Butch the Honey Bee, Ren & Stimpy, Eek the Cat, Avenger Penguins, Philbert Frog, Fantomcat, Space Goofs, Rocko's Modern Life, James the Cat, The Telebugs, Gold Lightan the Gold Warrior, Pirates of the Dark Water, Murun Buchstansangur, AAAHH! Real Monsters, Little Bear, The Trapdoor, Voltron, Demetan Croaker, Temple the Balloonist, Time Bokan, Firebird, Blue's Clues, Transformers, Doteraman, Franklin, Hey Arnold, Dexter's Lab, Johnny Bravo, Cow & Chicken, Angry Beavers, Powerpuff Girls, CatDog, Gatchaman, Kipper, Space Ace, Kit 'N' Kin, Kablam, Reboot, Sailor Moon, The Wombles, Bananas in Pyjamas, DragonBall Z, Spot the Dog, Rag, Tag & Bobtail, Space Ghost, and a lot of others were the greatest, funniest, most spectacular cartoons/anime/children's series EVER CREATED!!! I hope you remember these, there may be some unknown Foreign cartoons/anime in there. I want them back and on network TV and DVD!!!
