What Parents Need to Know

This review of Sabrina: The Animated Series was written by Andrea Graham

Parents need to know that this tween cartoon -- a spin-off of the live-action sitcom Sabrina, the Teenage Witch -- features similar lighthearted witch humor. Storylines focus on the trials and tribulations of being a tween: friendships, school assignments, and dealing with increasing responsibility. Many of the characters set positive examples of what it means to be a good friend.

More on Sabrina: The Animated Series

What’s the Story?

Spun off from the popular '90s show starring Melissa Joan Hart, SABRINA: THE ANIMATED SERIES has much in common with its predecessor. Sabrina is still half mortal and half witch, and the friend- and school-related trials and tribulations she faces (while trying to conceal her secret powers) aren't all that different, either. What has changed is that Sabrina (voiced here by Melissa Joan's younger sister, Emily Hart) is now a cartoon -- and she's 12 instead of 16.

Is It Any Good?

Although Sabrina: The Animated Series lacks some of the wit and magic of the original series, it's still a charming, positive show with plots that tweens should be able to relate to. Perhaps because Sabrina is younger, this version serves up more silly, cartoon-inspired humor than the live-action Sabrina. Most episodes feature funny, entertaining storylines in which Sabrina uses her witch powers to help a situation along, only to discover that she's complicated a problem instead of solving it. Inevitably, she realizes that a good, honest heart is more valuable than magic. By following this formula, the show teaches kids lessons about loyalty, acceptance, forgiveness, and more.

This show is not appropriate for children or adults

I don't believe in magic, it is evil, the show should be cancelled, it difinitely doesn't have good morals or good standards. This program will lead children down a path of destruction and failure. I'm not going to allow my child to watch this, anyone who has good values and morals shouldn't watch it.

    there are better shows...

Since whatever magic Sabrina performs usually backfires, I suppose this show could be used to demonstrate that there are no easy solutions to difficult problems. But if education is what you want, keep looking.
