Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 14–18

The good stuff

  • Messages:

References to blacks and homosexuals in the context of acknowledging that some people are uncomfortable with racial and sexuality differences (but nothing is derogatory). The main character shows signs of changing from a partying, one-night-stand kind of guy to one who'd actually consider a serious relationship with a woman.

What to watch out for

  • Violence:

    Not an issue.
  • Sex:

Steamy kissing as an implied prelude to sex; lots of sexual innuendo; conversation about one-night stands; woman shows a considerable amount of cleavage.
  • Language:

    "Ass" is said occasionally.
  • Consumerism:

Tastykakes are offered as an incentive for faculty members to vote in a school election.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

About Teachers

Parents need to know that this fairly ribald sitcom includes a lot of sexual jokes that may either offend young viewers or (if you're lucky) go completely over their heads. (One notable example from the pilot: A female teacher manages to stuff an entire, oblong-shaped Tastykake into her mouth, which prompts a male teacher to quip, "Good to know.") Also, one-night stands are talked about very nonchalantly and treated as something both desirable and not to be taken seriously.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about how the show portrays teachers. Based on your own experience, are they unrealistic? How so? Another discussion topic could be the show's sexual humor. Is it funny or offensive (or boring)? Should sex be handled in a more serious manner?
