Why We Rated This on for Ages 6 and Up

The good stuff

  • Messages:

The characters are all quirky in their own ways, and many of the adults are fairly clueless. The principal has an ironic distaste for all students, which is always played for humor. Some storylines lead kids to learn lessons in friendship and responsibility.

What to watch out for

  • Violence & scariness:

Mild cartoon peril includes exaggerated knocks to the head and tumbling down multiple flights of stairs, none of which results in injury.
  • Sexy stuff:

Occasional mention of crushes between students, but that's as far as it goes.
  • Language:

    Not an issue.
  • Consumerism:

    Not an issue.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

About Wayside

Parents need to know that there's virtually nothing to worry about in this cartoon series based on Louis Sachar's popular book series. The characters are quirky (the school principal dislikes kids, for example), and most of the adults come across as pretty out of touch with reality, but all in all, it's just the kind of humor that grade-schoolers will love. Cartoon peril (tumbles down stairs, bumps to the head) and platonic boy/girl crushes are mild and intermittent.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about how the stuff that goes on at Wayside compares to what happens at real kids' schools. Kids: What do you think of the teachers at Wayside? Who are your favorites? Why do you like them? Do they seem to do much teaching, or does class time seem like a free-for-all? Do you think the kids learn very much there? How is your classroom different? What do you think life would be like at that school? Families who've read the books can also discuss how the show is similar and different. Is it what you pictured when you read the stories?

    fine for everyone

I used to like it, but now it's so boring. I only go to it when I check EVERY kids channel. Even the ones I don't have. It's even more boring than watching HIPPOS! Ok, maybe it better than watching hippos. But,I still think it's boring. And the sound effects are sorta getting boring too. If you like it watch it. I'm just finally happy to express my feeling on this show.
