Common Sense Note

Parents need to know that this educational series offers a realistic view of life among wild animals in their natural habitats. Ecological and environmental concerns are central to each episode as viewers learn about endangered wildlife and forestland. Some young viewers may be upset by scenes of predators hunting and killing their prey. Be prepared to answer kids' questions about the animals and their behavior.

Families can talk about preserving nature. How do animals end up on the endangered species list? What might be the outcome of losing natural forestland? How have humans affected the lives of wild animals? What can we do to ensure their continued existence and the health of their environments?

Common Sense Review

Reviewed By: Emily Ashby

Wild Kingdom first debuted on NBC in 1963 and immediately became the forerunner in wildlife and nature entertainment. The highly acclaimed show ran for more than 20 years (and showed in syndication for 10 more) and was credited with raising ecological and environmental awareness in a whole new way.

In 2002, a joint effort between Mutual of Omaha and Animal Planet revived the classic series, and now viewers can once again experience nature in distant corners of the world.

MUTUAL OF OMAHA'S WILD KINGDOM is a virtual field trip into the natural habitat of all sorts of wild animals. Beautifully filmed and expertly narrated (most recently by Alec Baldwin), the show continues to set the standard for wildlife documentaries.

Episodes have chronicled topics as varied as wolves' adaptability in areas populated by humans; relationships among killer whales, elephant seals, and king penguins; and the first film footage of the highly endangered and elusive Butaan lizard.

The show explains animals' amazing survival tactics, dispels myths about them, and highlights their battles against extinction. In coming face-to-face with the delicate balance of nature, viewers may pause to consider the future of these animals -- and humans' roles in preserving it. Wild Kingdom is educational family TV at its best.
