What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this fun baking reality series is pretty mild and tween-friendly overall, but there is some mild sexual innuendo and occasional alcohol consumption and cigar smoking. The series is a promotional vehicle for star Duff Goldman’s bakery, Charm City Cakes, and cakes are often ordered by high-profile clients like actor Drew Carey. Kids may be drawn to seeing cakes designed to look like popular characters from Dr. Seuss books and movie/video game characters like the LEGO Indiana Jones.

  • The series emphasizes creativity, teamwork, and a strong work ethic while having fun.
  • Duff Goldman and his team are friends and dedicated co-workers. The team sometimes makes cakes for charity organizations.
  • Blowtorches, saws, and other potentially dangerous instruments are used to make cakes. Occasionally Chef Duff and his friends and/or clients engage in some playful wrestling, but no one gets hurt. Cakes sometimes fall and/or get crushed.
  • Some mild innuendo. Clients occasionally order cakes with suggestive themes; one cake features a couple hugging each other in bed.
  • Words like “stupid” and “hell” are occasionally audible.
  • The series is a promotional vehicle for Chef Duff and Charm City Cakes. Clients like Six Flags Theme Parks and Warner Brothers Studios order cakes that look like real-life roller coasters, Dr. Seuss characters, Indiana Jones, and locations like Harry Potter's Hogwarts. Chef Duff often has high profile clients like actor/TV host Drew Carey.
  • Alcohol is occasionally visible at clients' social events. Cigars are occasionally visible, but they're not generally smoked on camera.

What's the story?

ACE OF CAKES follows the day-to-day antics of pastry chef Duff Goldman at his Baltimore bakery. Cameras roll as the affable owner of Charm City Cakes designs and creates over-the-top desserts with the help of his spirited staff, including friends like executive sous chef Geof Manthorne, cake builder Ben Turner, and bakery art director Anna Ellison. The creative gang combines traditional methods with unconventional techniques that require drill saws and blowtorches in order to create cakes that look like giant dinosaurs, moving roller coasters, and even a replica of Harry Potter’s Hogwarts Castle. It isn’t easy, but the crew always manages to find a way to build and decorate cakes that satisfy their clients’ big imaginations.

Is it any good?

Ace of Cakes offers an entertaining behind-the-scenes look at what goes into designing and creating master cakes in one of the most popular bakeries in America. It also shows off the high-end skills that Chef Duff and his talented team bring to cake design, including intricate decorating work and sugar sculpting.

Some of the team’s quirky habits and crazy antics -- like trying to play hockey with Olympic-caliber disabled hockey players and carefully flying across the country with elite clients’ cakes in hand -- are definitely fun to watch. But it's the high level of teamwork and professionalism exhibited by this likable team that really makes the show a positive viewing experience.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about “behind-the-scenes” reality shows. Do business owners appear on these shows to generate publicity for their business? Are there other reasons?

  • What makes this kind of reality show interesting to viewers? How real do
you think the people are when the cameras are rolling? Do you think the cast
of this show is as fun and friendly as they seem on TV?

Best show you can have better than Cake Boss
Great show funny I have died laughing at plently of these episodes. I love this show and Chef Duff and the rest of the crew are cool and super funny. They all use teamwork and always help each other. This is much better than cake boss where Buddy is arrogent and can be a jerk. If you have to decide bettween Cake Boss and Ace of Cakes....pick Ace of Cakes all the time :)

AMAZING SHOW!!
Duff is a really great role model. there is nothing wrong with the show except for sometimes the clients order mildly inappropiate cakes. i think any kid can watch it and their parents will like it too. the only bad thing is sometimes the people in the bakery drink and there is a bar/restraunt across the street.

I really missed out this show! Ive been designing my son's birthday cake and I've got a lot of idea on this but “Ace of Cakes” and the celeb baker who runs it, Goldman, will no longer be aired on the Food Network channel after next year. The show's 10th and last year will begin airing in Jan. People take out payday loans regularly to try and get one of these cakes made on this show.
