Parents need to know that this lighthearted home-video clip show is harmless fun. Animals aren't hurt in any of the videos, and the themes and jokes stay appropriate for kids. Occasional jokes about animals flirting or in otherwise romantic situations never cross the line into mature territory. That said, the show doesn't always present the best examples of pet ownership. Some of the animals aren't treated with respect -- though the show makes it clear that they won't air clips in which animals are harmed in any way.
In THE ALL NEW PLANET'S FUNNIEST ANIMALS, host/comedian Keegan-Michael Key introduces clips that viewers have sent in of their pets engaged in silly animal behavior. Some segments follow a theme, like the one called "The Residents of Woofsteria Lane." Playing off the soap opera stylings of Desperate Housewives, the segment featured dogs doing funny jumps and canoodling with each other while the narrator and background music pulled the clips together into a rough storyline.
Unlike other home video shows, viewers aren't laughing at other people's pain or embarrassment, but rather the natural -- if unusual -- activities of animals. The occasional string tied to the tail of a cat is usually as nasty as it gets. Kids might be tempted to make their own home videos starring the family pet after watching this show -- just make sure they know that they won't get airtime if the animal is harmed in any way.
While adults will likely cringe at Key's downright awful jokes, grade-school kids might find the humor just right. It's all squeaky clean, if a little dull. This isn't educational television either, just pure fluff.
Families can talk about their pets. What's the funniest thing your pet has ever done? How did you get your pet? What kind of personality does your pet have? What's the hardest part about taking care of your pet? Is there anything your pet does that you'd like to catch on video? How can you make sure your pet won't get hurt while you're filming?
