Why We Rated This on for Ages 8 and Up

The good stuff

  • Educational value:

Though the show is intended more to entertain than to educate, kids might learn something about martial arts traditions.
  • Messages:

More thoughtful than your average action cartoon, this show includes themes that touch on bigger-picture issues like spirituality and duty.
  • Role models:

Aang is a happy-go-lucky hero who receives lots of help on his quest. The narrator is a female whose powers initially bring Aang back to life. Elders are present and generally revered, but the teenage males sometimes act irrationally and often aggressively.

What to watch out for

  • Violence & scariness:

This is a martial arts-themed cartoon. Tribes are at war, though traditional Asian concepts of honor and respect are integrated into the action as well.
  • Sexy stuff:

    Not an issue.
  • Language:

    Not an issue.
  • Consumerism:

    Not an issue.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

This review of Avatar: The Last Airbender was written by Joly Herman

Parents need to know that this series isn't a one-dimensional display of cartoon violence. The well-developed fantasy material includes a spiritual aspect that underlies much of the plot, making it an epic martial arts tale, rather than a bang-'em-up show. As long as you're OK with the show's level of action, it's a fine pick for grade-schoolers.

More on Avatar: The Last Airbender

What’s the Story?

In AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER, imbalance has fallen on the people as a result of the Fire Nation having declared war on all of the other tribes. Harmony has fallen to the wayside, forcing the surviving tribes to scatter to the winds. All the while, a uniting force has been missing for a century's time, as war has been raging. This force is embodied by the Avatar -- a being who encompasses mastery and balance of all of the elements. This peaceful presence had been lost to the world -- that is, until he comes to life in the body of an 11-year-old boy named Aang. Though Aang is the last of his tribe, he possesses a happy-go-lucky nature, which immediately endears him to the siblings who have discovered him frozen in the ocean. They soon realize the extent of Aang's powers and accompany him on his quest to realize his past and his present place in the world.

Is It Any Good?

An epic fantasy about a time -- "long ago" -- when mythological tribes of people were represented by the elements water, earth, air, and fire -- Avatar: The Last Airbender may look like a video game send-up, but it's really closer to Japanese-style anime. Mixing magical fantasy and comedy, martial arts challenge sequences with Godzilla-style monsters, Avatar goes beyond the everyday action cartoon, bringing an interesting mix of Asian mysticism and epic fiction to the small screen. Take note -- adults may enjoy this one as much as the kids do.

One of the best shows EVER

Oh my gosh this is one of my most favorite shows of all time! It has meanings, stories about the characters pasts, I mean the creatures actually thought things out! (Thats rare lately) and all of the characters are lovable. The music is great, its creative, funny, I mean its seriously one of the best shows on TV. And the characters are honorable, they dont treat anyone like dirt. I'd let my kids watch it, theres really nothing I can say bad about it. A few fights, some include inguries and Katara and Zuko's mothers died (before the show started so it wasnt seen) Nothing else really, its excellent. And they actually finished the series- thank you!

    For kids 9+

I like the show alot! I can't say anything really bad about it except the violence. There are kids of all ages in it. I mean the main character is just a kid... I think there is some educational value to the show since it is like asia in ancient times with a fiction twist on it.

    Fantastic Show

Avatar the last airbender is the story of the Avatar. A reincarnated person who can control the four elements, water, air, fire, and earth. Others can only control one element or none. This show has some Asian mysticism, for example, there are spirits of forests, of the moon, of the ocean, and so on. Otherwise this show has a good message in never giving up on people, or yourself. In the first season, The main character Aang (the avatar) was discovered frozen in ice by two other characters... Katara (a water bender) and Sokka (Katara's brother, not a bender). Aang, Katara, and Sokka search for a water bending teacher in the North Pole, they fly on their flying byson, Appa (who was also frozen with Aang), Aang realizes that he is 100 years in the future, when he was frozen, everyone thinks the Avatar has disappeared. Since then the fire nation has killed all of the Air Nomads (except Aang, because he was frozen) and invaded other places, including killing Katara's mother. Another two characters, Zuko (who was banished from the fire nation and has a large scar on his left eye) and Iroh (Zuko's uncle, a cheery man who loves tea and gives great advice) were sent out to find the Avatar. One thing that is great about this show is the story of Iroh, Iroh was a fire nation general when Zuko was a young child, he thought he had the vision to capture the earth kingdom capital... when he went to the city, he had a major defeat, including losing his son in battle, almost all of his advice to either Zuko or others comes from his past experiences. He is almost a role model to children because he was on the path of evil, but he turned away from it and is trying to do the same with Zuko (he is trying to stop him and turn him good). That is partially the first book (more like the first episode) but this show is great for people, it is violent because of the bending and all, but other than that, its a really good show.

    An Amazing TV Series

An amazing TV show. There may be too many hard concepts to understand, and some more complicated, but no adult jokes, but they are surrounded with kid friendly material, funny jokes, and great and well developed characters. But it is not all for the little ones, there is a lot of violence, but no blood, and concepts about society and living and stuff that kids younger than 7 will not understand. Just as an introduction, Aang, the Avatar, the only capable person on this different planet who can master all four elements (Water, Earth, Fire, and Air) and Aang was born as an Air Nomad, and almost mastered airbending. He realizes in the story that after being rescued from being frozen in an iceberg in the first episode, that he was in there for 100 years, and that a war brought on by the fire nation has occured. He quickly tries to master all four elements with his friends Kitara, Sokka, Toph, and avoiding enemies, Zuko, Zhao, Iroh, Azula, Ty Lee, Mai, and Ozai, before Sozin's Comet arrives and finishes off of what is left of the world.

This is the best show of all time! it is dark, edgy, and kicks butt. Move over, spongebob, avatar took your throne by far as the best nickelodeon show. However, i would not let my 6-year old cousin watch this. It would be too much.

Excellent choice for boys (and action-oriented girls) over 9

I'm 40 and have been watching this series with my 9-year-old son. I'm a bit of an anime fan and would highly recommend it as a good show to watch with your child. I've been impressed by it's humor and cleverness and touched by it's eloquent stories. There are moments where moral and personal growth issues are on display that can act as teachable opportunities. But there are also moments of humor where you can laugh with your child. This show is such a refreshing change from the many obnoxious-child, visually-warped, childrens programming I see out there these days. Due to the abundance of fighting scenes, some parents may find this kind of show too violent for their child.

Perfect as entertainment for kids and perfect for adults for entertainment AND knowledge.

Avatar:The Last Airbender is actually an excellent show. I'm now 18 but the show brings back memories everytime I watch it again; my friends and I grew up watching the episodes in middle school when it was new on Nickelodeon. For us, at the time, it was all about action, comedy, and pure joy watching and discussing the new episodes that came out every week. But now that I watch it again from time to time, I realize the secret hidden messages; the show contains some wisdom from the ancient Hind Phillosophy ( as it is name "AVATAR" ) and stuff, good, beneficial meaningg, that you can carry into your lives. Just makes me sad every time I watch it again and I get to the end of the book 3. So yeah I highly recommend it.

I love this show. I am 27 years old and watch it with my cousin's. It delivers a surprisingly good message of the damages of war and other relevant topics for kids who are trying to understand the events unfolding in the world. It is a show that accurately shows a post war world where many are orphans and refugees. Yet it is a children's show so the tone is light enough to take in. My family found that it was a good example of explaining the situation that the refugee kids in the class went through to reach the country. The action situations are violent but the heroes almost always act in a passive way, trying to avoid or defer direct violence and regretting aggressive behavior. I really like the message of how damaging war is and how it is important to understand that others have different views than you. The fire nation who are the antagonists and started the war are not necessarily evil just because they grew up in an nation that initiated war. A very good message and fun, funny action.

Best animated show on nick (besides spongebob-- he's classic!) :)

My whole family loves this show!!! It has great messages and the animation is beautifully done. The story is well put together and follows up every episode. It even refreshes your memory by saying "Previously on Avatar" and shows snippits from important episodes. Instead of a theme song, Avatar has this little naration thing in the beginning, which tells you what the show is about. I typed it here: "Long ago, the four nations lived in harmony. Then, everything changed when the fire nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements could stop him, but when the world needed him most, he vanished. Then, my brother and I discovered the new Avatar, and airbender named Aang. And although his air bending skills are great, he has a lot to learn before he's ready to save anyone. But I believe Aang can save the world." It's a great show, but you'll enjoy it more if you watch it in order.
