Parents need to know that this series -- in which a thrill-seeking comedian tries various amusement park rides and backyard stunts -- is family-friendly overall, but kids of all ages should be reminded that many of the featured activities are extremely dangerous and shouldn't be tried at home. Occasional curses (like “s--t”) are fully bleeped.
In BERT THE CONQUERER, comedian Bert Kreischer attempts to triumph over a variety of terrifying amusement park attractions and backyard stunts. The funny man travels across America to experience the adrenaline-pumping excitement of gravity-defying roller coasters, sky diving machines, and similar amusements. He also willingly tries frightening and potentially dangerous backyard stunts -- like being shot across a canyon in a giant handmade slingshot -- and samples some of small-town America’s local annual traditions and challenges.
Overall, Bert the Conqueror highlights the different ways that people across America satisfy their thrill-seeking cravings. It also shines a light on some unique cultural events that celebrate American small-town culture. Some of the activities seem a little zany, and many -- especially some of the backyard stunts -- are a little dangerous, too. But the show is non-judgmental about these activities and the people who participate in them. Instead, it offers an interesting look at how far Americans will go to have fun.
Families can talk about the thrill-seeking impulse. Why do people purposely look for ways to experience the sensations of flying, falling, and/or crashing?
How do the stunts featured on this show compare to those on a series like, for example, Jackass? Is one kind of stunt more kid/family-friendly than the other? Why?
Are there events and/or challenges that your local community participates in to celebrate your community’s history and/or culture? What are they? Do you know the history behind these events?
