What parents need to know

Parents need to know that since the host of this series purposely seeks out unusual food choices -- by American standards, that is -- viewers will see him eat things like rodents, insects, fertilized eggs, and whole baby chickens on a stick. Outdoor market scenes often show animal carcasses and seafood being butchered, so this probably isn't for the littlest viewers -- or older ones with weak stomachs.

  • The series' varied cultural content includes information about each country's geography, climate, language, transportation, history, architecture, and wildlife.
  • The show promotes learning about the world and all that it has to offer, approaching each new fact/place/food with an open mind and eager curiosity.
  • Zimmern is unfailingly respectful to indigenous culture and traditional cuisine everywhere he goes (no matter how bizarre the foods), and he often explains the religious, economical, or health-related importance of natives' meal choices.
  • All kinds of animals, fish, and insects are eaten whole (including heads, feet, and wings) -- some while they're still alive. Many scenes show animal carcasses being butchered.

What's the story?

In BIZARRE FOODS WITH ANDREW ZIMMERN, world-renowned chef/dining critic Andrew Zimmern combines his passion for food with his love of travel to learn about international cultures by sampling traditional cuisine in different countries. Each episode in this eye-opening series spotlights a different country, from Morocco to Ecuador to Spain. Zimmern visits restaurants and outdoor food markets in a handful of cities in each country, trying foods that range from unexpectedly delicious (stuffed frogs) to downright bizarre (wood-devouring mangrove worms, pulled from their own pulpy feasts and sent down the hatch raw).

Is it any good?

The jovial Zimmern never shies away from a culinary challenge. And even when an unsavory sample leaves his taste buds crying uncle, he's always respectful of his host country's cultural appreciation of the food and conscientious about explaining the traditional and economical importance of local dining choices.

Bizarre Foods is a family-friendly educational series that's filled with facts about each country's history, geography, language, and native plant and animal life. If you can, watch with your kids so you can answer their questions about the unusual foods on display. And be sure to keep the littlest viewers (and those with weak stomachs) out of the room: There are frequent scenes of animal carcasses being cut up, and it might be upsetting to watch recognizable animals (baby chickens on a stick, for example) being eaten.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about food. What are some of your family's favorite foods? How do those foods get to your home? How do you prepare them? What's the strangest thing you've ever eaten?

  • Once you're talking about food, you can discuss the importance of a balanced diet. What is the food pyramid? What kinds of foods are important for staying healthy? How do our bodies respond to poor diets? What other things can people do to stay healthy?

Awesome, Andrew Rocks
The show is self descriptive, the host goes out and tries food that is unusual to your palate, but the way he describes and presents his experiences makes his show truly enjoyable one, Andrew is really funny fella, just delightful in his personality, even though what he eats is not really. the best episode of his shows was his trip to morocco, wonderful episode. i even like lamb meat now. Watch that show.

I almost Threw up
I thinks its a great idea to have a person going around the world to discover all the interesting foods out there but he has NO MANNERS! he chomps on his food like a cow. you hear every piece being chewed up and sucked on and its absolutely repulsive! i would really appreciate if there was a way your could move the microphone from his tonsils so i could enjoy the show and not be upset in the stomach from his mouth noises......

Love it... not for those with a weak stomach...
I love this show, and so do my kids. It's wonderful to see someone going around the world and not turning their noses up at foreign foods. If you have a fairly weak stomach, not a great choice. But otherwise, a very fun family show!

Awesome Food Show!
I LOVE Bizarre Foods!!! That's one of my favorite shows, and my favorite episode is the one about Sydney. It inspired me a little, and an hour later I got a sudden craving for Vegemite, although we don't have any at home...

Andrew Zimmerman often does not have respect for another culture. His comments IN ENGLISH are ok but his facial expressions says it all. He often makes a disgusting facial expression which everyone can see and then he would say " Please tell them that I am very grateful for everything but this is just a textural thing I am not used to". Maybe that's what his viewers need, I don't know. I gave him a long 6 month trial but I can not do it anymore. It seems that he is talking to 6 year old kids and everyone around him is imbecile. In comparison, I love Tony Bourdain show. In comparison to it, Zimmern's (Zimmerman's???) show is oriented more towards kids < 8y/o ???. Sorry, no more Bizarre Foods for me. My Husband gave up about 4 months ago...

A must see show
Now, there are hundreds, even thousands of tv shows that will take you on a culinary tour of various countries; however, none of them do it the way that Andrew Zimmern does. He's a down to earth, strong character with a stomach to match. You can expect to be whisked off of your sofa to far away lands on a tantalizing tasting tour of the world. If you are expecting to see him dine on Orange chicken in China, or steak fajitas in mexico then you will be sadly mistaken. Not this guy, his palate is far more accustomed to the likes of pigs brains in Spain, rooster's testicles in Taiwan and silk worms in Vietnam. Not only do you get a taste of the local (bizarre) cuisine, but you can also expect to be mesmerized by the local cultures too. Food fans and fans of anthropology will love this show. You've heard the saying "don't play with your food", well with Andrew Zimmern gives the food a chance to return the favor. Bon Appetite!

LOVE IT
I love this show! It's very educational and teaches kids about foreign cultures and cuisines. Mr. Zimmern is very respectful of different cultures, and never refuses to eat something. I'm sure he could teach me a lesson or 2 about turning my nose up at my mother's cooking. :) You should watch this, along with Little People, Big World and Meerkat Manor. :)

Great for the whole family.
My family can't miss this show. It's the one things we ALL agree on (ages 2 to 32). And we always learn something new about another culture AND each other.
