What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this reality series -- in which four young men travel the country to accomplish the 100 things they want to do before they die -- ultimately sends a positive message about living life to the fullest while giving back to the community. Though it contains some bleeped curse words, silly pranks, and sneaky behavior, the show is pretty mild compared to other MTV reality offerings.

Positive messages: Overall the series emphasizes the idea that it's important to live life to the fullest and realize as many dreams as you can before it's too late. Stresses the importance of giving back to the community. Sends the message that sometimes you have to "break the rules" in order to accomplish your dreams.
Positive role models: The guys play silly pranks and resort to some sneaky tactics to get things crossed off their list. But they're committed to helping people around the country fulfill their dreams. The four are very close friends.
Violence: The group is occasionally asked to leave specific places before the police are called.
Sex: The guys are sometimes seen in their underwear, and on occasion their bare bottoms are visible (all nudity is blurred). A visit to the Playboy Mansion includes dancing with bikini-clad women on stripper poles.
Language: Lots of bleeped swearing, including curses like “f--k” and “s--t."
Consumerism: Not applicable.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: Alcohol consumption is visible at parties.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
  • Families can talk about what they would put on their "buried list." What might stop you from accomplishing those dreams? What will it take to realize them?

  • Is it worth breaking rules or going to extremes to fulfill your dreams? When do you think that it's time to stop trying? How can you help others in your community realize their own dreams?

What's the story?

What's the story?

THE BURIED LIFE follows the journey of four twentysomething men who are challenging themselves to complete a list of 100 things they want to do before they die. Canadians Ben Nemtin, Dave Lingwood, Duncan Penn, and his brother Jonnie travel across North America in a purple transit bus attempting to cross off items on their list. They also ask members of the communities they visit to think about the dreams they want to realize before their lives are over. For every item they cross off their list, the team helps a stranger in that community accomplish a dream of his or her own.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

The team’s journey, which began four years ago, is based on the idea that people’s dreams often don't get realized because they get buried under the responsibilities of everyday life. The show challenges viewers to motivate themselves to pursue as many of their dreams as they can today, rather than waiting until it's too late to think about them.

Granted, the four young men sometimes use silly and/or underhanded tactics (like sneaking into places in disguise) to accomplish their goals. And some of their adventures seem a little staged, too. But the general message is overwhelmingly positive: Live today’s life to the fullest, and give back to those who need a little help doing so.

Meaningful Show When Four Teens Do 100 Things
This show rocks! It is SOOOO entertaining. I love it because it makes you think- what do I want to do before I die, you know? I love shows like that. The guys are good role models and they send good messages to younger viewers. Some curse words are audible, but most bleeped out (the major ones are). Overall, this show is awesome and you need to watch it!

Great show, great messages.
This show is heartwarming. The role models are good and the boys have positive messages to send. The only bad things are when they curse, and there is some sexual content.

Love it!l I am 15 years... and find the message inspirational. Yes, some rules or even laws are broken. But these four young men strive to live their life to the fullest and help others along the way.

Best "Reality" show on TV
In a world where "reality show" is anything but REAL, this show is really good and send way positive message to kids to enjoy life while we are here, and help others. One of the BEST shows MTV has on. KEEP IT GOING STRONG, Ben-Dave-Duncan-and Jonnie!

The Buried Life
A great group of young men who live their lives to the fullest, and inspire others to do so as well. I love the dedication the group has to make sure they succeed in their goal to complete their list. A good show for kids, tweens, teens, and yes, the adults will love it too.
